Windows 95/98 Dial-Up Instructions for Faculty/Staff

Username: Is the same as your office PC username.
Password: Is the same as your office PC password.
Note: When you change your password for your office PC, the Dial-Up password will also change to the new office PC password.

Introduction

The Windows dialer is built in to the Windows95/98 operating system and can be used to connect to any WPUNJnet computing resorces as well as to the Internet. This means you need not install additional software to connect to WPUNJnet. The process of installing this Windows dialer is long, but not difficult if you follow the instructions below.

These instructions are designed to help faculty/staff configure the major portions of the Win95/98 dialer for access to the WPUNJnet computing resources as well as the Internet. The username and password for the dialer are the same ones used in your office assigned by Information Systems.

Understand that this type of access was intended for local commuters. Long distance telephone charges may apply depending where you are calling from.

Step 1: You will first need to determine if Dial-Up Networking is installed on your computer.

  • Double-click on the My Computer icon and look for the "Dial-Up Networking icon" as show below.
  • If you see it skip to Step 3, otherwise go to Step 2. Installing Dial-up Networking

Step 2. Installing Dial-up Networking

  • Bring up the Control Panel and select "Add/Remove Programs"
  • Select the "Windows Setup" tab and double click on "Communications"
  • Check the box marked "Dial-up Networking" and click [OK] (You may need the original Win95/98 CD-ROM into the drive for this installation and you will be asked to reboot your computer.)

Step 3: Installing the Necessary Network Components

You really need two network components installed, Dial-Up Adapter, and TCP/IP. If you don't have the below components installed, follow these steps, otherwise proceed with step 4:
  • Bring up the Control Panel and select "Network"
  • Click "Add", "Adapter", "Microsoft", and "Dial-Up Adapter"
  • Click "Add", "Protocol", "Microsoft", and "TCP/IP"

Step 4: Configuring TCP/IP

Now you need to configure the TCP/IP protocol for WPUNJnet.

  • Bring up the Control Panel and Double click on the "Network" icon.
  • Double click on the TCP/IP protocol in the Network windows.
  • IP Address tab = "Obtain an IP address automatically"
  • WINS Configuration tab = "Diasble WINS resolution"
  • Gateway tab = leave blank
  • Advanced tab = leave alone
  • DNS Configuration
    • Enable DNS
    • Host = "PC_Hostname" (the name of your computer)
    • Domain = "wpunj.edu"
    • DNS Server search order = "149.151.1.9" and then click [add]

      After all the necessary network components have been installed select the "ok" button. At this point you may be asked to restart you computer. Do not panic, this is normal.

Step 5: Make the WPnet Connection

  • Double click on "My Computer"
  • Double click on "Dial-up Networking"
  • Double click on "Make New Connection"
  • Follow the prompts and enter "WPnet" for the name of the computer you are dialing to and "653-3001" as the phone number
  • Click on "Finish" to complete the process. A new "WPnet" icon is now created.

Step 6: Configuring WPUnet Dial-up Connection

In order to complete the configuration of your Dial-Up connection you need to follow these steps:
  • RIGHT-CLICK with the mouse on the "WPnet" Dial-Up connection you have just created.
  • Select "Properties".
  • Click on the "Server Type" button.



  • Check mark the "Enable software compression" box.
  • Remove the check marks from the "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX Compatible" boxes.
  • Click on the TCP/IP Settings.



    Make sure that the following TCP/IP setting are correct.

  • Click on the "Server assigned IP address" radio button.
  • Click on the "Specify name server address" radio button and enter "149.151.1.9" as the primary DNS.
  • Check mark the "Use IP header compression" box.
  • Check mark the "Use default gateway on remote network" box.
  • Click on ok several times until you get back into the "General" WPnet window.



  • Select the "Configure" button.



  • Select the "Options" tab
  • Remove any check marks from the "Conection control" window section boxes.



  • Click on ok several times until close all Dial-Up Networking open windows.

    Step 7: Run the Dialer

    Ok, we are bascially done. Now we just need to run the dialer.

    • Select "My Computer", then "Dial-up Networking", then your WPnet dialer.
    • When the connect window comes up, enter your username and password. If you don't want reenter your password every time your connect, select the "save password" box.

    Step 8: Checking your connection

    Now if something goes wrong during dialing, you need to read the error and try to figure out what is configured wrong. If you get connected but things don't appear to be working, try the following steps to diagnose the problem

    • Select "Start", then "Programs", then "MS-dos prompt"
    • At the prompt, type "ping 149.151.1.9". If you don't get a reply, then you probably misconfigured your dialer, script, or IP address.
    • If the above works, try "ping student.wpunj.edu". If you don't get a reply, then you probably misconfigured your DNS settings.
    • If both of the above works, try "ping www.yahoo.com". If you don't get a reply, then you probably misconfigured the IP address or Gateway settings.
