Introduction
The Windows
dialer is built in to the Windows95/98 operating system and
can be used to connect to any WPUNJnet computing resorces as
well as to the Internet. This means you need not install additional
software to connect to WPUNJnet. The process of installing this
Windows dialer is long, but not difficult if you follow the
instructions below.
These
instructions are designed to help faculty/staff configure
the major portions of the Win95/98 dialer for access to the
WPUNJnet computing resources as well as the Internet. The
username and password for the dialer are the same ones used
in your office assigned by Information Systems.
Understand
that this type of access was intended for local commuters.
Long distance telephone charges may apply depending where
you are calling from.
Step
1: You will first need to determine if Dial-Up Networking
is installed on your computer.
- Double-click
on the My Computer icon and look for the "Dial-Up
Networking icon" as show below.
- If
you see it skip to Step 3, otherwise go to Step 2. Installing
Dial-up Networking

2. Installing Dial-up Networking
- Bring
up the Control Panel and select "Add/Remove Programs"
- Select
the "Windows Setup" tab and double click on "Communications"
- Check
the box marked "Dial-up Networking" and click [OK]
(You may need the original Win95/98 CD-ROM into the drive
for this installation and you will be asked to reboot your
computer.)
Step
3: Installing the Necessary Network Components
You really
need two network components installed, Dial-Up Adapter,
and TCP/IP. If you don't have the below components installed,
follow these steps, otherwise proceed with step 4:
- Bring
up the Control Panel and select "Network"
- Click
"Add", "Adapter", "Microsoft", and
"Dial-Up Adapter"
- Click
"Add", "Protocol", "Microsoft", and
"TCP/IP"
Step
4: Configuring TCP/IP
Now you
need to configure the TCP/IP protocol for WPUNJnet.
- Bring
up the Control Panel and Double click on the "Network" icon.
- Double
click on the TCP/IP protocol in the Network windows.
- IP
Address tab = "Obtain an IP address automatically"
- WINS
Configuration tab = "Diasble WINS resolution"
- Gateway
tab = leave blank
- Advanced
tab = leave alone
- DNS

Step
5: Make the WPnet Connection
- Double
click on "My Computer"
- Double
click on "Dial-up Networking"
- Double
click on "Make New Connection"
- Follow
the prompts and enter "WPnet" for the name of the
computer you are dialing to and "653-3001" as the
phone number
- Click
on "Finish" to complete the process. A new "WPnet"
icon is now created.
Step
6: Configuring WPUnet Dial-up Connection
In order
to complete the configuration of your Dial-Up connection you
need to follow these steps:
- RIGHT-CLICK
with the mouse on the "WPnet" Dial-Up connection
you have just created.
- Select
"Properties".
