Network
Access FAQ's
What is network access?
Network access is being able
to use the University computer resources such as Email, Web
access, Internet access, etc. directly from your room.
How do I obtain network
access?
All residence
halls are connected to the WPUNJnet backbone and all its resources
including the Internet. With a computer that complies with the University's Residence
Halls network requirements, students have now full access
to the Internet, the "Exchange" student e-mail system,
the University's library catalog, etc.
In order to expedite and secure all access to the ResNet and all other campus computing resources, NHS has adopted a new authentication process. All resident students are required to follow this authentication process to gain ResNet access. To simplify this process NHS has created a new support workshop centrally located to the residence halls. The new ResNet Workshop will provide all ResNet students with the needed technical support in order to join the ResNet.
Is this the only way to
obtain access to the University computer resources?
No. Another method to access our
University’s computer resources is through our student laboratories
available in the Atrium as well as the Library, Science and
Hobart Hall buildings. In addition both the Towers and Pioneer
Hall dormitories have a local student lab located at the ground
entry level. Ask your local RA for specific locations.
What is a MAC Address?
A MAC
address is a unique number that identifies a network card
for network communication. This number is branded my the network
card manufacturer and cannot be changed or tampered with.
There can only be one unique MAC address per network card
in the world!!

Who do I call for network
connectivity problems?
To begin, you need to differentiate
network hardware problems from software or account access
problems. First find out if you have network connectivity
at all. You can do that by opening a DOS window (go to Start,
Programs and then Dos prompt), then issue the following
commands at the "c:>" prompt:
ping loopback (if you get a
reply this means that your network adapter works)
ping ns.wpunj.edu (if
you get a reply this means that you have network access)
If the above pinging fails with
a time-out message, call the Information Systems/Network
Service office at x2304.
If the above pinging is successful,
this is an application or account access problem. For help
with this, call the ResNet workshop at x2304.

Will I receive other installed
software such as MS Word, WordPerfect, MS Excel, etc?
No. It is your responsibility
to purchase these applications.
Does network support include
support for other computer applications such as MS Word, MS
Excel, WordPerfect, etc?
No. But if any of the applications
that you are using on your computer are also being used in
the Atrium’s student labs, then, you are entitled to receive
support by the Student Technology Consultant Help Desk x2599,
as part of the Student Technology Program funded by your technology
fee.
In the event, I experience
any hardware or software failure on my computer after the
network adapter was installed, is the University responsible
for any damage?
Generally, no. It is your responsibility
during the appointment to check that your computer is fully
functional after the installation of the network adapter card
and before you sign the form.
If any damage has occurred during
the appointment and after the installation of the network
adapter report the damage immediately to both the trained
student present at the appointment and Information Systems/Network
Services, x4357.
What happens if for some
reason the network adapter installation cannot be completed?
If for some reason the network
adapter install cannot be completed during the optional appointment,
your computer configuration will be returned to its original
configuration. You will still need to sign a form attesting
to the correct functionality of your computer. Then, a new
appointment will be scheduled. At the second appointment,
if your computer network access problem cannot be resolved,
you are entitled to a full refund of the network access fee.
