Frequently Asked Questions

What type of phone service is provided?
The Office of Telecommunications provides telephone and voicemail service to residential students.  Residents are provided with phone service including call waiting, 3-way calling, voice mail and the ability to make local and on-campus calls and receive campus and external calls.

Why should I use the Universities’ phone service?
The University and Residence Life utilize the campus extension and voice mail as the first point of contact to residential students regarding Emergency Notifications and other general announcements.

Do I need to bring a phone?
Residents provide their own telephone—one per room. The telephone number is shared with the roommate.

How do I make off-campus calls?
Local calling is permitted. Currently our system does not support long-distance service. Students can make long-distance calls by purchasing a calling card or by utilizing a cell phone. For a complete listing of the free local calling areas please click here.

Will I always have the same phone number?
Telephone numbers and voice mail extensions are permanently assigned to each room. If you change your room, your telephone number and voice mail extension will change also. In the event that you change rooms, Residence Life will notify the Telecom Department of this change. Telecom will then update the extension and voicemail information in WPConnect.

How do I setup voice mail?
Individualized voicemail boxes are assigned to each resident with an automated attendant recording is assigned to each extension. You can obtain your extension and voice mail number by logging onto WPConnect, accessing the self-service tab then clicking on the "Resident Hall Telephone Information" link.  Please note that Questions or concerns about your WPConnect access should be directed to the helpdesk at HELP (x4357 / 973-720-4357) or help@wpunj.edu. For voicemail setup instructions please click here.

Who do I contact for telephone problems?
All repairs should be directed to 973-720-3515 or telecom@wpunj.edu. A Telecom technician will be dispatched to the Residence Hall for physical problems to a line or jack. Voice Mail issues will be handled via telephone or email.
