Trouble Shooting

Listed below is a list of common problems and solutions. If you have a different problem, or these solutions do not work, please contact the Telecommunications Department at extension 2597.

Be aware that trouble-shooting procedures are different for Faculty/Staff and Students. Please follow accordingly

No Dial Tone

  • Make sure you have the phone plugged into the phone jack and not the data jack. Students living in the apartments need to be aware that the kitchen jacks are no longer in use. Your telephone jacks are in each bedroom.

  • Check to see if the handset is placed properly on the phone.

  • Check to make sure that the wires from the handset to the phone and from the phone to the wall are plugged in securely and are not loose.

  • Try another phone in the jack to see if the problem is with your particular phone. Resident Students: If your telephone is Bell South or Southwestern Bell it will not work with this phone system.

Phone Doesn't Ring

  • Make sure the handset is placed on the phone.

  • Check to see that the "Hi-Lo-Off" switch on your phone is not set to "Off". Also, is the volume turned all the way up?

  • Did you send your calls directly to your voice mail (call coverage)? Pick up the handset, listen for a dial tone, press # then 3. Hang up.

  • Did you transfer your call to another location (call forward)? Pick up the handset, listen for a dial tone, press # then 2. Hang up.

  • Try another phone in the jack.

Can Receive Calls, but Can't Dial Out

  • Make sure you dial "9" before the number.

  • Faculty and Staff: Check your class of restriction. You may be restricted from making that particular call.
