Department of Anthropology

Anthropology (BA)

:: Department Catalog — Program and Curriculum Info [PDF]

The anthropology program provides students with a comprehensive understanding of human nature. A major (B.A.) allows students to develop a special awareness of ethnic and cultural differences and equips them with a variety of methods to address basic human concerns. Offerings in Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology and Linguistic Anthropology will provide you with a broad education and prepare you for diverse career paths.

The anthropology program emphasizes student success through:

  • faculty who strive to maintain a close relationship with students, in which one-on-one attention encourages academic and nonacademic achievement.
  • active, engaged students who organize trips to museums, zoos and other institutions.
  • a curriculum that includes archaeology (Africa, Asia, Mesoamerica, Europe, North America), ethnography, and ethnology (Africa, Asia, Europe, Americas, the United States), linguistics, and physical anthropology (human origins and diversity, forensics).
  • a program that fosters international and cross-cultural experience. Travel study courses have taken place in China, Central America, Thailand, the American Southwest, France, and other destinations, both fascinating and educational.

In addition to preparing students for graduate studies, a growing emphasis on applied anthropology (e.g., forensics, archeological field school, cultural resource management) opens career opportunities in a wide variety of settings, including:

  • advertising
  • business
  • criminology
  • education
  • government
  • journalism
  • public health
  • psychology

Independent studies and internships in archaeology, physical anthropology, and cultural anthropology also provide opportunities to develop specialized knowledge in a major area of anthropological interest.
