Department of Languages and Cultures

The Department of Languages and Cultures provides courses in second or foreign languages from basic to advanced levels. Language majors make students much more valuable and competitive in a global context. Departmental offerings include:

  • two unique majors, French and Francophone Studies as well as Spanish, which provide superlative training in language, cultural studies, literature, and linguistics of the French- and Spanish-speaking worlds.
  • two interdisciplinary majors in Latin American studies as well as Asian studies, which provide students with thorough expertise in historical, political, cultural and linguistic areas.
  • endorsements in bilingual/bicultural education and English as a second language.

The department is the home of the Spanish and French Clubs for students majoring in Spanish or French and Francophone Studies, as well as those interested in Hispanic cultures. The clubs help to plan academic, cultural, and social activities. Several Latino fraternities, sororities, and honor societies are also associated with the department. Every year it also sponsors the Annual Bilingual/ESL Conference, and the Poetry Recitation Contest, and cosponsors the Annual Círculo de Cultura Panamericano conference on Spanish and Latin American literature and culture.

Graduates have advanced to careers in:

  • teaching
  • bilingual media production
  • bilingual advocacy
