Application Procedures for Nursing Majors

The William Paterson University nursing department offers a four-year bachelor of science degree. Students who complete the degree are eligible for RN licensure. Please note that the department does not offer an associate's degree for RN licensure. The University will admit qualified freshmen, transfer, second-degree, re-admit, and international students to the B.S. program for fall semesters only (except RN's- please see below).

RN students applying for spring admission must apply by November 1.

RN to B.S.
The department also offers a RN to B.S. degree for those students that have graduated with an A.A.S. from a community college or diploma from a hospital program. Admission is available for fall and spring semesters for RN-licensed students.

Freshman Applicants
Students applying as a Freshman must submit an application, high school transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, a written essay, and recommendations.

Prospective freshman Nursing majors are required to take both a biology and chemistry course, with laboratory, in high school, in which they attained minimum grades of "B" or better.

Students are required to have a minimum SAT score of 1050 (with a minimum verbal/critical reading score of 500) or equivalent ACT scores; and rank in the top 25 percent of their class. If the high school does not rank, overall GPA and course selection will be substituted.

Freshmen who meet University requirements for admission, but do not meet the nursing major requirements noted above, will be accepted to the University as Undeclared. Students will have the opportunity to reapply to the nursing department after completion of prerequisite coursework. Please note, however, that due to the competitiveness of the program, admission to the nursing major is neither implied nor guaranteed.

Students applying as non-traditional may not be admitted directly into nursing and will be admitted as undeclared.

Transfers
Students applying as a transfer (with 12 or more college-level credits excluding remedial courses), second-degree, re-admit, or international students must submit transcripts from each and every institution attended (no exceptions).

Transfer, second degree, readmit, and international students are eligible for admission following submission of the application, transcripts, and after a review by the nursing department committee. All decisions are rendered by this committee.

Students are strongly encouraged to have an overall GPA of 3.00 and the same GPA in prerequisite science coursework to increase chances of admission.

Although upper-division students may be admitted to the major, they will not be allowed to enroll in nursing courses until they are cleared by the Department of Nursing.

The application deadline is February 1st, students should be notified within eight to ten weeks after the decision. The nursing laboratory sequence ONLY begins in the fall semester.

Please note that if an applicant has received a failing grade in any nursing clinical course/experience, the applicant WILL NOT be accepted into the program regardless of GPA.

Accelerated BSN Program
Students interested in the Accelerated Program should note that the program is 16 months in duration, offered only to full-time day students, and begins once each year in May. Students must apply for the subsequent fall semester and, if admitted, will be cleared for the prior summer coursework by the nursing department.

Students are required to meet the above second-degree guidelines, have an overall mandated GPA of 3.00, and must have completed university equivalents
(with minimum grades of B in each) of the following 9 courses:

Anatomy and Physiology I and II (BI0 112, BIO 113), Microbiology (BIO 170), General Psychology (PSY 110), Developmental Psychology (PSY 210), College Chemistry with Lab (CHEM 131/031), Organic Biochemistry with LAB (CHEM 132/032), Nutrition (CMHL 221), and Statistics (MATH 130).

A qualified applicant for the accelerated sequence may be admitted to the University as a second-degree student and complete the pre-requisites prior to beginning the program. There are a limited number of seats.

Change of Major
Students enrolled in the University may apply for a change of major after completing twelve (12) credits at William Paterson. The student must have completed at least one of the following: BIO 112, BIO 113, BIO 170, BIO 312 or CHEM 399 at William Paterson. Students choosing to change their major must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5, but a higher GPA will increase the possibility of a successful change of major. Upon meeting these requirements, the student needs to apply for a change of major online in WPconnect for review by the department. The deadline for change of major is February 1; students should be notified within eight to ten weeks of the decision.

Students granted a change of major will not be allowed to enroll in nursing courses until they are cleared by the Department of Nursing. Permission to take courses in the nursing program is dependent both upon evidence of student achievement in preparatory courses and the number of available seats.

Accepted Students
Students will receive a credit evaluation that will list the classes that were accepted by the university/department only after acceptance. Any discussion prior to the actual evaluation being received is unofficial and nonbinding.

Students will be assigned an advisor for the subsequent semester. Students are encouraged to contact the nursing department directly for advisement during their first semester at William Paterson University. Students not accepted to the department will not be advised by the department.
