William Paterson has experienced successful partnerships with employers by providing them with quality interns. Throughout the years many internships have resulted in full-time hires, benefiting the student and employers. As we continue to grow as a university, we look forward to enhancing these relationships and expanding our Internship Program. What is an internship? Frequently referred to as internships, cooperative education or field work, an internship is the opportunity to earn academic credits while gaining professional work experience in a field of interest without making a long-term commitment to one career. Internships allow students to learn by taking on responsible roles as workers and to observe and reflect on what happens while at their assignment sites.

| University Internship Standards |
Minimum Requirements Internships, like all other educational experiences, are most effective only when students are ready for them. The goal is to have program participation by well-motivated students who understand the relationship between theory and practice, who possess reflective observation skills, and who have a commitment to excellence. To ensure that the internships offered to students provide the most constructive experience possible, the following minimal requirements are recommended for student internships:
- Students should have a 2.5 GPA or better in both their major and overall studies. Course credits may range from 1 to 15.
- Students should complete 40 hours of work as a minimum per credit granted. Junior or Senior status should be achieved.
- A faculty member must supervise the internship. Criteria of evaluation for grades should be established prior to implementation (P/F or letter grade)
- Job descriptions for each placement should be maintained
Students must establish a Learning Contract at the beginning of fieldwork. Fieldwork supervisors must submit an evaluation of student performance. Internships must be offered as distinct and approved courses.
