Your resume may be reproduced in a variety of methods:
Laser Printing: Having a resume prepared on a personal computer provides a great deal of flexibility when it comes to making changes and having it printed. Laser printers also have a selection of fonts. William Paterson University students can visit the Career Development Center to print resumes on a laser jet printer donated by Enterprise Rent-A-Car. Students supply paper of their own choice.
Photocopy: Simple, fast and economical. Professional photo copying machines will produce a quality product from your original resume, but do not use a photocopier in a library or other public area as the quality is often poor.
Offset Printing: This process delivers a higher quality finish than photocopying and provides you with a greater choice of paper and color.
Typeset: By far the most professional looking type of finish and the most expensive. Like laser printing, you can select sizes and styles of type. With this format you can fit about 1 ½ pages of typewritten information onto a single sheet. Your finished product will be of magazine quality.
Printers: Check the Yellow Pages for a printer near your home, as you may have to make several trips. Errors in content are typically the responsibility of the customer. Be sure you have your final copy proofread by several people before bringing it to a printer. Remember to request a final proof copy to compare with your original resume, to ensure accuracy.
Paper: Conservative colors (ivory, light gray, tan or white) are recommended. Avoid papers with noticeably uneven surface, especially if you are using a laser printer. You should use a minimum weight of #20 bond paper. It looks best to use the same paper for cover letters, and mail them in a matching envelope. Most stationery and office supply stores carry a selection of paper.
Internet: When creating an internet resume either use html coding or save as a text file (.txt). When saving as a text file, also be sure to refrain from having more than 70 spaces across and do not use bullets, bold, underline and/or italic. Instead use *, ~, or – for emphasis.
Final Comments: Do not try to put too much on your resume. Use white space effectively. There are a number of acceptable styles; look at various samples before choosing one.
