Mission of AACS

Committed to Excellence, the Department of African, African American and Caribbean Studies dedicates itself to encouraging and promoting the interdisciplinary study of Continental and Diasporan African societies and cultures. With its scholarly expertise in peoples of African descent, the department intends to enrich the general education of all students, preparing them to function in a multi-racial and multi-cultural world, and to broaden the preparation of those interested in professional careers.

Students can major in AACS, receiving a Bachelor's degree or a general minor in the Department. In addition, we offer a multidisciplinary minor in Caribbean Studies. Our majors have gone on to such professions as teaching, law, business, social service, and other professions. The Liberal Arts education that is provided allows students to take with them the perspective of people of African descent from throughout the world. Through courses in African Languages and Literature, History, Sociology, Psychology, Politics, Urban and Community Development and Expressive Culture (music, dance, theatre, choir, film) students are presented with a variety of options for intensive study.

The images that you see on this page all have relevance to persons of African descent. Our department is committed to providing all students with an interdisciplinary focus on the African experience, whether it is in the Caribbean, North or South America, Europe, or the Continent of Africa.
