Mission and Goals

The Department of Geography and Urban Studies at William Paterson University is committed to the following goals:

  • To introduce our graduates to the theoretical and applied aspects of geography and urban studies
  • To teach our graduates to think critically and synthesize ideas and phenomena from a geographic perspective
  • To advance the frontiers of geography and urban studies through teaching, research, and community service
  • To contribute to the liberal arts curriculum by providing students an understanding of the variety and complexity of the world’s cultural, economic, and environmental systems and interactions
  • To prepare our graduates to be able to compete successfully in the workplace a and in graduate school
  • To inform contemporary debates about globalization and global change by analyzing spatial patterns and processes that reflect and inform social, environmental, political, economic, cultural practices
