The history major consists of thirty-six
course credits; it combines broad coverage with great flexibility.
Students must take a one-year introductory American history course
(six credits) and one year of European history (six credits) and one
year of non-Western (i.e. Asian, Latin American or Middle Eastern)
history (six credits). This eighteen credit core requirement provides
a broad foundation upon which to develop fields of interest from a
wide range of elective courses at the 200, 300, and 400 levels.
History majors can undertake a guided independent
study in an approved subject of their choice; intern as curators
and archivists at local museums and historical societies, participate
in the activities of the History Club; and earn membership in the
WPUNJ chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the international History Honor
Society.
Students who want to combine history with
other subjects can take a double major (for example: history and
early childhood education or history and communication), or can
take an eighteen credit minor in history (combined, for example,
with a political science major).
