Community Leaders and William Paterson University Alumni to be Honored During 16th Annual Legacy Award Gala on April 8

The Legacy Award Gala and Silent/Live Auction, the William Paterson University Foundation’s annual event to raise scholarship funds for William Paterson students, will be held on Saturday, April 8 at The Villa at Mountain Lakes.



Pre-Law Students Participate in Moot Court

The six students who took part in the first Annual William Paterson Collegiate Moot Court Competition (CMCC) have had an opportunity to stand before a real judge, argue a real case, and experience first-hand, the trials and tribulations of the law profession.



Hallie Cohen Named Head Coach of Israeli National Softball Team

Hallie Cohen, the head softball coach at William Paterson University and one of the most successful coaches in NCAA Division III history, has been named the head coach of the Israeli National Softball Team that will play its first games this summer. Cohen was chosen by the Israel Baseball League, which is developing the first Israeli National Softball Team, after a nationwide search of college coaches.



William Paterson University Celebrates Women’s History Month in March

Joetta Clark Diggs, a four-time Olympian and daughter of noted educator and William Paterson University alumnus Joe Clark, presented a lecture about building dreams during the opening ceremony of Women’s History Month on March 2.

Lectures, performances, and films continue to support the theme of “Women: Builders of Communities and Dreams,” during William Paterson University’s ongoing observance of Women’s History Month in March.  Most events are free, and open to the public.

Author and Wolf Watcher Brian Connolly to Speak at William Paterson University Library
on April 2

Brian Connolly, an avid wolf watcher and author of the young adult novel Wolf Journal, will discuss how observing wolves in their natural habitat inspired his writing during a lecture at William Paterson University on Sunday, April 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library Auditorium.  Admission is free.  The program is sponsored by the Friends of the David and Lorraine Cheng Library; a reception will follow the lecture.

Upcoming Arts Events on Campus

The New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, a professional ensemble in residence at the University, and the William Paterson University New Music Ensemble will celebrate the life and career of award-winning New Jersey composer Milton Babbitt in honor of his 90th birthday during a special concert on campus on March 24, 2006. Kenny Garrett, one of the most inspiring alto/soprano saxophone forces in jazz, will perform with the William Paterson University Jazz Ensemble, directed by David Demsey, for the final concert of the Spring 2006 Jazz Room Series on Sunday, March 27, 2006. The William Paterson University Performing Arts Theatre Series presents Zombie Prom, a high-camp, 1950s-style musical, at Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus from April 6 to 11.  Scenes from operas by Puccini, Rossini, Mozart, Beethoven and Bizet will be performed by members of William Paterson University’s Opera Workshop on Wednesday, April 12 and Thursday, April 13 at 8:00 p.m.

William Paterson University's New Center for Closely Held Business to Hold Kick-Off Event on May 9

Neil Koenig, an internationally renowned family business and management consultant and author of You Can’t Fire Me, I’m Your Father:  What Every Family Business Needs to Know for Success, will share practical strategies for family businesses during an interactive presentation at William Paterson University on Tuesday, May 9. His presentation serves as the kickoff for the new Center for Closely Held Business at William Paterson University, which is dedicated to the success of family and closely held firms in the northern New Jersey region.

Conference on the Future of Television News to be Held at William Paterson University on April 6

The changing nature of television news will be explored by a distinguished group of panelists who will discuss a range topics, including how the Internet and other new technologies are reshaping the news, the state of investigative news, and whether the future of news lies in information or entertainment, during a program at William Paterson University on Thursday, April 6.

Upcoming Exhibits at Ben Shahn Galleries

Three exhibits will be on display at the Ben Shahn Galleries at William Paterson University from March 19 through April 21. Elaine Chong, a New Jersey artist whose work includes drawings, prints and handmade paper, will exhibit a variety of prints and drawings, as well as a site-specific installation. “Connections,” the ninth annual national juried art exhibition presented by Studio Montclair, includes works by 75 contemporary artists from across the United States who submitted selections focused around the theme of connections; and “American Impressions,” a juried exhibit of works by 41 professional printmakers from across the United States, includes a variety of printmaking media, including woodcut, etching, monotype/monoprint, lithography, intaglio, silkscreen, and processes involving photography-derived imagery and digital collage.



University Observance of African Heritage Month

Tyrone Bledsoe, associate vice president for student services, and dean of student life, Sam Houston State University, and founder of the Student African American Brotherhood spoke to students as part of the University’s observance of African Heritage Month on February 16.



Asian Festival Celebrates the Colors of Springtime

Holi, a festival of colors held in the spring in India and Nepal, was observed on campus on March 9. The event, sponsored by the Department of Languages and Cultures, was held in the Atrium
Lobby.



The event included traditional Indian foods and clothing. The use of colors for face painting is an integral part of the holiday celebration. Red is the most common color used to celebrate the holiday, but other colors such as green, yellow and pink are also used for decoration. “The purpose of today’s celebration is to expose our students to the culture of Asia through a fun activity,” said Anil Kumar, assistant professor of languages and cultures.



Swimmer Clegg Becomes a Seven-Time All-American

William Paterson University women's swimmer Kristin Clegg, a senior, earned All-America status for the seventh time in her career after finishing 15th in the 100-yard backstroke on March 10 at the NCAA Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships held at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.



Men's Basketball Advances Into Elite 8 of NCAA Division III Championship

The William Paterson University men's basketball team enjoyed one of its finest seasons ever, winning the New Jersey Athletic Conference championship and reaching the Elite 8 of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship for just the fifth time in school history. The Pioneers, who finished 23-8, posted victories over Scranton, Villa Julie and Widener before losing to Virginia Wesleyan in the national quarterfinals.
