William Paterson University will hold its 183rd commencement on Tuesday, May 16, 2006. Separate ceremonies will be held for undergraduate and graduate students. The commencement ceremony for undergraduate students will begin at 10:30 a.m., and will be held on Wightman Field; the rain date is May 17. The graduate ceremony will begin at 4:00 p.m. in the Rec Center, rain or shine. Bachelor’s degrees will be conferred upon 869 undergraduates, all of whom have completed their degree requirements as of May 2006. Master’s degrees will be conferred on 294 students who completed their degree requirements between August 2005 and May 2006.
At the undergraduate ceremony, Milton Babbitt, the Pulitzer Prize-winning New Jersey composer, will receive an honorary doctor of humane letters degree. Maureen Conway, retired vice president for emerging market solutions for Hewlett-Packard Company and a 1966 graduate of William Paterson, will receive the President’s Medal, and will be the commencement speaker. President Arnold Speert will also address the graduating class. Linda Dye, professor of exercise and movement sciences, will lead the procession in the role of University marshal.
Richard Gephardt, a former House Majority Leader, who served in the
Wynton Marsalis, one of the world’s most recognized jazz artists, made a special dual-event appearance in Shea Center on campus on Sunday, March 19. The jazz trumpeter, bandleader, and composer performed with his quintet during a sold-out Jazz Room Series concert in the afternoon, and returned to Shea Center that evening to discuss music and jazz as a unique American art form during the Distinguished Lecturer Series.
William Paterson University to Hold Annual Writer’s Conference Alison Lurie and Edward Hower, award-winning novelists, will appear as special guests at William Paterson University’s annual Spring Writer’s Conference on Saturday, April 22. The event will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Atrium on campus. It is sponsored by the University’s English Department.
Annual Conference Celebrates 25th Anniversary
Launched in 1981, the Bilingual/ESL conference is recognized as one of the most comprehensive language education forums in New Jersey, and regularly draws several hundred educators as participants. This year’s conference, held on April 1, marked the 25th anniversary of the event. To celebrate, Gladys Nussenbaum, conference founder and retired William Paterson professor of languages and cultures, prepares to cut the cake. The conference is sponsored by the Center for Continuing Education and Distance Learning.
University Honors Composer Milton Babbitt on 90th Birthday
The New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, a professional ensemble in residence at the University, and the William Paterson University New Music Ensemble celebrated the life and career of the award-winning New Jersey composer Milton Babbitt in honor of his 90th birthday during a special concert on campus on March 24. Here, Babbitt (right) joins Peter Jarvis, an adjunct professor of music and director of the ensemble, on the Shea Center stage during the event.

A group of well-known journalists spoke on campus on April 6 about issues and concerns in the field of television news in a conference coordinated by Joann Lee , professor and chair of the Communication Department, and John Rhodes, professor of communication. Panelists included Mary Alice Williams, broadcast journalist for WCBS 880 and the Discovery Health Channel; Eric Ober, an award-winning journalist and former president of CBS News; David Puente, broadcast producer and anchor for ABC News Now; and Virginia Rohan, media critic for the Record.
The calendar of events for the annual observance of Women’s History Month at William Paterson University concluded this year with the newly instituted Women of Vision Awards presented to alumni, faculty and community leaders. Recipients were Jean Aires ’64, M.A. ’88, retired teacher, Passaic High School, trustee, William Paterson University Foundation, and a member of the Alumni Association Executive Council; Evelyn Barbee ’78, retired supervisor for the City of Paterson Youth Services Bureau/Total Lifestyles and Support Program; Faith Zahn, a graduating senior, founding member of the first local chapter of Habitat for Humanity, senior class treasurer, and member of Alpha Sigma Tau sorority; Christine Kelly, associate professor, political science, and director of the American Democracy Project; and Carolyn L. Strimike, M.S.N, R.N, a health care professional at the Women’s Health Center, Department of Cardiovascular Services, St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center, and director of an outreach program at St. Joseph’s, Women’s Risk Factors for Heart Disease.
A group of students who are members of the newly formed William Paterson University chapter of Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) took part in the Eastern Region competition in Philadelphia sponsored by the national organization on March 28. The students worked on three community outreach projects that dealt with financial learning, in which they worked out a plan to assist high school students to focus on budgeting time and money, consult with small businesses and help them to improve in areas such as market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy and business ethics, and raise money for four inner-city schools through a golf tournament. Based on their efforts, they were named the Rookie of the Year team, an award given to young teams which show promise and potential. The competition was one of 17 held this year by the national organization. Upcoming University Arts Events Acclaimed folk singers Richard Shindell and Lucy Kaplansky will perform together at William Paterson University on Saturday, April 22 at 8:00 p.m. in Shea Center. “The Amazing Adventures of Peter Rabbit” will be staged on Sunday, April 23. Presented by the Connecticut Children’s Theater, the performance will be held at 2:00 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. The William Paterson University Music Department will host the eleventh annual guitar festival, Guitarfest 2006, on April 29 in the Atrium auditorium. The William Paterson University Chorus and the William Paterson University Chamber Singers will present a spring concert featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem Mass in D minor on Tuesday, May 2 at 8:00 p.m. in Shea Center. Admission is free. Six William Paterson music majors participated in the 2006 Eastern Region Conference of the National Association of Teachers of Singing at the University of West Virginia in March. William Paterson University head softball coach Hallie Cohen earned her 500th career victory on April 9 when the Pioneers defeated New Jersey City, 11-0, in the first game of a doubleheader. The 12th-year coach ranks ninth all-time in NCAA Division III history in coaching wins.
William Paterson University junior outfielder Don Reinertsen captured the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Region and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week awards earlier this week. |
