University Observes African Heritage Month

Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, one of three artists in the pioneering rap group Run-DMC, spoke about “Art from the Heart” during a lecture on campus on February 6 sponsored by Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association and the Universal Hip Hop Cultural Organization.  McDaniels, who appeared as part of the University’s African Heritage Month celebration, returned to campus on February 15 to host Spoken Word Speaks!, the second in a series of open mic evenings of spoken word poetry.


Last Poets Present Workshops, Performance on Campus

The Last Poets, the seminal spoken-word artists from the 1960s, presented performance poetry workshops for high school and William Paterson students on February 7 in Shea Center.  Abiodun Oyewole and Umar Bin Hassan, two of the group’s three members, worked with the students on creating and sharing their own spoken word poetry.  They also presented an evening performance in Shea Center.  The events were part of the University’s observance of African Heritage Month.

William Paterson University’s African Heritage Month observance continues with a lecture “Ban the N-Word!” to be held on Thursday, February 22 in the Cheng Library Auditorium from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m. The discussion is hosted by Brothers for Awareness, a campus group.

These and other African Heritage Month were sponsored by: Student Government Association, The African Heritage Month Committee, Student Activities and Programming Board, Brothers for Awareness, CARIBSA, EBONEE, National Pan-Hellenic Council, NAACP-William Paterson Chapter, SABLE, Lambda Sigma Upsilon, Alumni Relations, The Women’s Center and The John Victor Machuga Foundation/ Campus Activities and Student Leadership.
