A lecture by a civil rights activist, performances, and films support the theme of “Generations of Women Moving History Forward,” William Paterson University’s observance of Women’s History Month in March.  Most events are free, and open to the public.

University Observes African Heritage Month

As part of the University’s observance of African Heritage Month, Darryl “DMC” McDaniels, one of three artists in the pioneering rap group Run-DMC, spoke about “Art from the Heart” during a lecture on campus on February 6.  The observance continued with The Last Poets, the seminal spoken-word artists from the 1960s, who presented performance poetry workshops and their poetry on February 7.

Author Jack Canfield to Speak About Achieving Success to Students at William Paterson

Jack Canfield, author of the best-selling Chicken Soup for the Soul series of books, will present a lecture as part of The Society of Leadership and Success, a national organization designed to give college students the motivation, support, and training to become effective leaders, on Tuesday, February 27, at 6:45 p.m. at William Paterson University in Wayne.

Barbara J. Bohny, associate professor of nursing, died on Saturday, January 27. Appointed to the faculty in September 1995, she was the coordinator of the graduate program in nursing for several years.


Women’s Basketball Secures Top Seed for Upcoming NJAC Tournament

The William Paterson women’s basketball team
(21-4, 11-2 NJAC) has secured the top overall seed for the upcoming New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Tournament.  The Pioneers, who won the North Division title, will receive a first-round bye, and will host the winner of the Richard Stockton/Rutgers-Newark contest in the semifinals Thursday, Feb. 22, at 7:00 p.m.  The highest remaining overall seed will host the championship game Saturday, Feb. 24.

Renowned Photographer Lectures on Campus

George Tice, the award-winning New Jersey photographer, presented a tour of his exhibit of recent photographs, “Paterson II,” on February 11 in the Ben Shahn Galleries on campus.  More than 100 people crowded into the galleries to hear Tice reveal the stories behind the photographs, which focus on Paterson’s natural areas, such as Garret Mountain and the Passaic Falls, as well as the city’s shops, houses, and street scenes.  The event was sponsored by the Ben Shahn Galleries and the Friends of the Cheng Library.  Tice’s exhibit in Ben Shahn is on view through March 2.

Upcoming University Arts Events

Horacee Arnold, a master percussionist and longtime jazz instructor at William Paterson, will perform at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, February 18 as part of the spring Jazz Room Series.

The series will continue with Wycliffe Gordon and his Quartet on February 25 and Gil Lopez on March 4.

Hindemithon, the annual festival celebrating the life and works of the German composer Paul Hindemith, will feature a special evening concert on Friday, February 16, 2007 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center. End of the World Button, a new absurbist comedy and the winner of the New Jersey Playwright’s Competition, will be presented from February 23 to March 3 in the Hunziker Black Box Theatre. Stone Soup and Other Stories, a classic collection of folk tales, will be staged on March 3 at 2:00 p.m. in Shea Center as part of the Vistas Series.

Men’s Basketball Finishes Season on a High Note

The William Paterson men’s basketball team (15-10, 6-7 NJAC) finished the 2006-07 season on a high note, defeating conference tournament-bound Rutgers-Newark (16-8, 6-6 NJAC) 66-61 Feb. 15 at WPU’s Rec Center.

Luis Martinez (Passaic, N.J./Clifton) had 13 tallies to finish his career 19th in scoring (1,119).

Swimming and Diving Teams Prepare for Met Championships Feb. 16-18

The William Paterson men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will turn their attention to the Metropolitan Championships Feb. 16-18 at the Rutgers Aquatics Center.
