University to Hold Commencement on May 15

William Paterson University will hold its 184th commencement on Tuesday, May 15, 2007.  Separate ceremonies will be held for undergraduate and graduate students.  At the undergraduate ceremony, Cory Booker, the mayor of the City of Newark, will receive an honorary doctor of laws degree and will be the commencement speaker. The commencement ceremony for undergraduate students will begin at 10:30 a.m., and will be held on Wightman Field; the rain date is May 16.  The graduate ceremony will begin at 5:00 p.m. under a tent at the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road, and will take place rain or shine.

Conference on Globalization and Its Impact on Higher Education to Be Held on April 26-27

The transforming impact of globalization policies on the structure and purposes of higher education practices in the United States and around the world will be explored during a two-day conference at William Paterson University in Wayne on April 26 and 27, 2007.

William Paterson Reschedules Distinguished Lecturer Series Program Featuring Retired New Jersey Chief Justice Deborah T. Poritz with Steve Adubato for May 4

Deborah T. Poritz, retired chief justice of the New Jersey Supreme Court, will be interviewed by Steve Adubato, host of One-on-One with Steve Adubato, as part of William Paterson University’s 27th Distinguished Lecturer Series on May 4 at 8:00 p.m. in the University’s Shea Center for Performing Arts. The program, originally scheduled for March 16, was postponed due to inclement weather.Tickets issued for March 16, will be honored on May 4. Historian to Give Annual Jefferson Lecture

Doron Ben-Atar, Ph.D., the chair of the history department at Fordham University and a member of Fordham’s Middle East studies and women’s studies programs, will present the 23rd Annual Abram Kartch/Thomas Jefferson Lecture on Wednesday, May 2, 2007.

Alumnus Featured on “Dancing With the Stars.”

Ian Ziering, a 1987 graduate of William Paterson University, who is an actor, Broadway performer, and filmmaker, is currently featured as one of twelve dancing couples on Dancing with the Stars, a reality show on ABC which airs on Monday nights. So far, the former star of the hit TV show Beverly Hills 90210, has made it through the sixth week of competition with professional partner Cheryl Burke, who led her two previous partners to victory. Ziering recently had a supporting role in the film Domino, and wrote, produced, directed, and starred in Man vs. Monday, a short film. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in dramatic arts.

A Variety of Summer Study Options Offered for Summer 2007

More than 700 courses in every discipline will be available during the summer session, which begins May 21 and runs through August 14.  For the first time, students can choose from courses offered for three, four, or six weeks, and can earn up to 12 credits.  Courses will be available during the day and evening, as well as online.

Wide Range of Camps for High School and Middle School Students Offered During Summer 2007 at William Paterson University

High school and middle school students can explore a wide variety of interests at William Paterson University during summer camps on the University’s Wayne campus during July and August. New camp experiences have been added to last year’s list. Topics include jazz, scratch DJ, TV news broadcasting, dance, comedy, nursing, writing, Web design, investing and leadership, among others.

Pioneer Golf Classic to be Held June 5

The 10th annual William Paterson Pioneer Golf Classic will be held Tuesday, June 5, at Black Bear Golf Course in Franklin, N.J. Registration will begin at noon, followed by a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.

Cost for individual golfers is $175; the rate for foursomes is $700. Hole sponsorships are available for $100.

Golf fees include greens fees, cart, use of locker and showers, cocktail hour and an elegant buffet dinner. An on-site raffle will be held for Pioneer athletic gear and other valuable prizes. For additional information, call x2100.

Mulgrew Miller, director of jazz studies, will perform as soloist with the 17-piece William Paterson Jazz Orchestra in a special finale of the Jazz Room Series on Friday, April 27. Carmina Burana, Carl Orff’s famous scenic cantata, will be performed by the William Paterson University Choir and the William Paterson University Chamber Singers on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at 8:00 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts.

Natesha Eaton ‘04, access and information services unit, Cheng Library, died on February 26.  She had worked on campus since 1987 in a several departments including the Registrar’s Office, the Advisement Center, the Office of the Dean of the College of Education, and the Department of Mathematics. She moved to the library in 2003.
Eaton, who earned a degree in sociology from William Paterson University in 2004, was the first person in her family to earn a college degree. To support her daughter and to put herself through college, she worked two fulltime jobs.  On campus, she often acted as a mentor to students, always finding an encouraging word to help students with their studies.



William Paterson University Foundation Raises the Highest Amount Ever at Annual Legacy Award Gala
—Close to $500,000 Raised to Support Student Success; Christos and Suzanne Cotsakos and David F. Bolger Donate Additional Funds During Gala

The William Paterson University Foundation raised close to $500,000, the highest amount ever generated by the Legacy gala, during the 17th annual dinner and silent auction held on April 14 at The Villa at Mountain Lakes.  The event raises funds to support the University’s mission of promoting student success and academic excellence.

Filmmaker Rory Kennedy Is Speaker for William Paterson University Women’s Leadership Conference on May 2

Rory Kennedy, one of the nation’s most prolific independent documentary filmmakers, will be the speaker for the Women’s Leadership Conference at William Paterson University on Wednesday, May 2, 2007.  The event, in the University’s building at 1600 Valley Road, begins at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail reception, followed by the program at 6:30 p.m. and dessert and coffee at 8:00 p.m.  The cost is $40 per person.

William Paterson University’s Center for Closely Held Business to Feature Local Mayors in a Dialogue about Business Development on May 8

Policies and initiatives to support the growth and development of businesses in local communities will be discussed by area mayors in a program conducted by the University’s Center for Closely Held Business on May 8 at 6:30 p.m. at 1600 Valley Road in Wayne.

Music Students Spend Spring Break in New Orleans Building Homes for Displaced Musicians

Ten students and two faculty members from the William Paterson music department traveled to New Orleans during spring break week in March to work on the Habitat for Humanity’s Musicians' Village, where seventy single-family homes are being rebuilt for musicians and others who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

“You must be there a while to comprehend the size of the devastation and appreciate how much New Orleans has accomplished so far,” says Stephen Marcone, interim dean of the College of the Arts and Communication, who accompanied the students along with Carol Frierson-Campbell, assistant professor of music.  “It was a truly rewarding experience for all of us.”

William Paterson University Participates In Celebration of Russ Berrie’s Philanthropic Legacy

In a unique celebration of the late Russ Berrie’s philanthropic legacy, the University participated in a series of memorial events created to coincide with his birthday and coordinated by the Russell Berrie Foundation. At one event, alumni and students of William Paterson’s professional sales degree program made short presentations on what the Russ Berrie Institute and the sales program have meant to them in terms of career path and opportunity. The William Paterson University Equestrian Team has earned two berths in the Zones Championship, a regional competition to be held at St. Lawrence University in Canton, Ohio, marking the first time in the history of the team that riders have qualified to compete in this event.  Jaimee Merriman, a junior, and Jennifer Moran, a senior, each placed third in the regional championship and qualified to move on to the championships. Merriman competes in the walk/trot division, and Moran will compete in the advanced walk/trot.

The William Paterson University Bowling Teamplaced second in the East Coast Sectional Tournament held on March 24 and 25 in Allentown, Pa. The team advanced to the finals to be held April 18 to 21 in Wichita, Ks. William Paterson is among 16 teams who will compete. This is the team’s first trip to the nationals since 2004. The Eastern Intercollegiate Bowling Conference voted Greg Hatzisavvas, president of the team, most valuable player for an outstanding season. Additionally, Hatzisavvas, Charles Hicks and Brett Pennock were named to the Academic All-American Team by the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association, who also selected Matt O’Grady, rookie of the year. The Bowling Writers Association of America picked O’Grady as a male runner-up and placed Matthew Deuire in the honorable mention category as 2006-2007 All-Americans.

Softball Posts 22-10 Start, Takes on NJAC Leader Tuesday

The William Paterson softball team has posted a 22-10 overall record as of April 23, and sits in a tie for third place in the New Jersey Athletic Conference standings with a 9-5 slate.  The Pioneers will take on NJAC-leader Montclair State April 24 at 3:00 p.m. in Montclair, and will finish conference regular-season play at home against TCNJ Saturday, April 28, at 1:00 p.m.

Martinez Named Third-Team All-American

William Paterson senior 6-5 forward Luis Martinez (Passaic, N.J./Clifton) earned a spot on the 2007 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) All-America Third Team.  Previously named to the NABC All-Atlantic District First Team, d3hoops.com All-Region Second Team, New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) All-First Team and Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) All-First Team, Martinez led the Pioneers with 15.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 steals per contest this season, shooting 48.4 (140-289) percent from the field.

Custis Earns All-America Laurels

William Paterson senior guard Luci Custis (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clark) was named to the d3hoops.com All-America Fourth Team, the group announced March 18.  Previously named to the Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division III All-America Honorable Mention Team and the d3hoops.com All-Atlantic Region First Team, Custis was selected as the 2007 New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, earning a spot on the All-NJAC First Team.



Schraer, Ballard Earn NJAC Weekly Honors

A pair of William Paterson softball pitchers were honored with New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) weekly awards April 2. Junior Diana Schraer (Paramus, N.J./Paramus) was named the league’s Pitcher of the Week, while freshman Danielle Ballard (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) was selected as the Rookie Pitcher of the Week for the second time this season.  In addition, Schraer was selected as the ECAC Metro Region Pitcher of the Week April 3.

Reinertsen Selected as National Co-Hitter of the Week

William Paterson senior Don Reinertsen (Swartzwood, N.J./Kittatinny) added to his growing list of awards as he was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Co-Hitter of the Week on April 5.  Reinertsen was previously named the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), New Jersey Collegiate Baseball Association (NJCBA), Gotham Baseball Magazine and ECAC Metro Region Player of the Week.

Baseball to Finish Regular-Season Play this Week

The William Paterson baseball team (15-14-2, 3-10-1 NJAC) will finish its regular season with five games this week, playing a home game against Manhattanville (April 24, 4:00 p.m.) before taking to the road to face TCNJ (April 26, 3:30 p.m.) and Rutgers-Camden (3:30 p.m.).  The Pioneers will finish their regular-season slate at home, hosting Ramapo for a doubleheader Saturday, April 28, at 12:00 p.m.
