Q. During the summer of 1953 a children’s play school was initiated
to bring children to campus who were available for demonstration teaching
and child study. This program also made it possible for summer session
students to bring their children ages 3-11 to campus for a small fee and
supervised activity. What was this group called?
1. Wee Collegians
2. Paterson Children’s Education Center
3. The Hunziker Half-Pints
4. The Little Pioneer’s Program
No one provided the correct
answer to last month’s question about the first organized
women’s sport on campus. The correct answer is basketball
which was first organized as a woman’s varsity sport
during the 1925-1926 school year according to the Paterson
State Normal School Handbook for that year.

Zoom-In:
How to Set up a Program of Fitness and Nutrition — a
Q&A with Gordon Schmidt, professor
and chair, exercise and movement sciences
Q. As the new year
begins, what are some ways we can improve our nutrition and
establish a program of exercise to improve fitness?
Schmidt: Establishing
healthy routines takes commitment and motivation. People who
have a new year’s resolution to adopt a healthy lifestyle
and stay involved in a diet or fitness routine on their own
do not have the willpower to sustain the program in the long
term. We need other people to support our efforts. One of
the key ways to succeed is to begin a positive routine that
can be sustained. Getting started is often the hardest thing
to do. Enlisting the support of a friend or a family member
will help provide encouragement for people who need an extra
push to get involved or stay in shape.
Eating a balanced diet is the key to sensible weight management. The
fad diets have their pluses and minuses. The current promotion of low
carbs, eating more protein and fewer carbohydrates, or restricting certain
foods has taken the country by storm. Portion control is possibly the
biggest factor in weight loss. Watch how much snacking you do. Learn
to read nutrition labels and understand how much a ‘serving’ is.
Simple sugars are packed with calories that provide little nutritional
value. Complex carbohydrates found in fruits and vegetables are better
sources of sustained energy. Don’t skip meals, especially breakfast.
