Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani
Speaks at DLS
 |
| Rudy Giuliani |
What makes a good leader?
Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani outlined his six principles
for good leadership during a lecture on February 6 as part of the
University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series.
Before the evening lecture, Giuliani met with journalism and political
science students from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m in Hobart Manor on campus.
Tina Lesher, professor of communication, moderated the forum, while
he fielded student questions which ranged from politics to baseball.
Later, speaking to an admiring crowd who filled the auditorium despite
the torrential rain and cold weather, Giuliani, who led his city
during the aftermath of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001,
said he was able to lead during that time because of two beliefs
he holds to be true. “I believe in God,” he said, “and
I believe people who live in freedom will prevail.”
He stressed that to be a good leader one must have a strong set
of personal beliefs or a philosophy. “Without that, you can’t
lead others,” he said. Other qualities of leadership, according
to Giuliani, are optimism, courage, relentless preparation, teamwork,
and communication.
