Grant Appointed Athletic Director

Sabrina Grant
Sabrina Grant has been appointed as William Paterson University’s director of athletics after serving nearly 20 years as an athletic department administrator. She had been the interim director of athletics since last July, when Art Eason retired after 30 years as the University’s director of athletics.

Christos M. Cotsakos to Speak at Distinguished Lecturer Series on March 28 — Tickets Available at Shea Center Box Office


One of the University’s most notable alums, Christos M. Cotsakos, a 1973 graduate, and former chairman and CEO of E*TRADE Group, Inc., will speak as part of the Distinguished Lecturer Series in Shea Center on March 28 at 8:00 p.m. He is the first University alumnus to speak during the 23 years the series has been in existence and joins the series’ roster of acclaimed lecturers which includes former President Gerald Ford, singer Beverly Sills, author John Updike, and humor columnist Dave Barry. Panel to Discuss Bush Administration Policies on March 26 and 27 — Discussion initiates collaboration between

Albies Earns Election into ABCA Hall of Fame

Legendary baseball coach Jeff Albies, who has guided William Paterson’s baseball programs to two national championships during his first 28 seasons, has been elected into the prestigious American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame’s Class of 2004. The ABCA Hall of Fame will have 204 members when Albies and his class are inducted on Jan. 4, 2004, in San Antonio, TX.

University to Present Business Leadership Forum on Wednesday, March 26 — Three prominent CEOs to discuss business trends and issues

Three leading metropolitan area CEOs will discuss today’s most pressing executive issues during a Leadership Forum, "The Future of Business: Shareholders and Stakeholders," on Wednesday, March 26, at 2:00 p.m. in the 1600 Valley Road auditorium at William Paterson University in Wayne. Admission is free and open to the public.

Raymond Arthur, president of Toysrus.com, William Pesce, president and CEO of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., and Eileen Scott, CEO of Pathmark Stores, Inc. – all notable alumni of William Paterson – will be the speakers. The New Jersey Percussion Ensemble, a driving force in the state of New Jersey for the performance of new music, pays tribute to founder Raymond Des Roches, a recently retired William Paterson University professor of music, during a special New Music Festival concert on Monday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. in Shea Center for Performing Arts on campus. Symposium on Philosophy and Jazz to Be Held on March 25

Using philosophy to understand music is the topic of a symposium to be held on March 25 in the Martini Teleconference Center from 12:30 to 4:45 p.m.

"Philosophy and the Arts: The Aesthetics of Jazz" is a panel discussion between philosophers, jazz musicians, and educators. Panelists will debate many topics including the nature of jazz, what makes jazz beautiful, what is universal about jazz and whether jazz conveys moral messages.

The symposium is coordinated by Leonard Harris, the University’s Distinguished Visiting Professor. Participants include William Paterson music department faculty James Williams, director of the Jazz Studies Program; David Demsey, coordinator of the Jazz Studies Program; and adjunct professors Bill Goodwin and Don Braden. Two William Paterson professors of philosophy, Stephen Thompson and Daniel Kolak, will also participate. Also taking part are Paul J. Burlett, vice president, University of Rochester; Bill Lawson, department of philosophy, Michigan State University; Jarrard Harris, DePaul Jazz Band, DePaul University; and Albert Mosely, department of philosophy, Smith College.

Conference for Women Held

Monique Greenwood, the former editor-in-chief of Essence magazine and an author, journalist and motivational speaker, presented the keynote address, "Having What Matters," during the Sister to Sister conference earlier this month.


Sociology Professor’s Research is Topic of Lecture

The Faculty Book and Creative Expression Lecture Series, sponsored by Provost and Executive Vice President Chernoh Sesay, continues with Vincent Parillo, a professor of sociology, as the featured speaker. He will present data from a national study he conducted. The program will be held on March 26 at 2:00 p.m. in the Paterson Room of the Cheng Library.

How Far Away Do I Want You Near? measured the degree of social acceptance by college students of 30 racial and ethnic groups from across the United States. Participants were asked to respond to seven indicators of social distance ranging from the highest level of tolerance ("would accept marrying into my family") to the lowest level of tolerance ("would bar from entering my country"). Parillo will analyze the influence of race, gender, religion, and length of U.S. residence on these findings, as well as the impact of the terror attacks on September 11, 2001.

five seasons.

Led by junior
Kenneisha Reid, the 2002 New Jersey Athletic Conference outdoor long and triple jump champion, the Pioneers open their season March 29 at the Monmouth University Invitational. Also keep an eye on sophomore Lisa Welch, an honorable mention All-NJAC shot put thrower during the indoor season. On the men’s side, junior distance runner Brad Gatens and sophomore hurdler Dan Washington lead the way.

Baseball Look Ahead

The Pioneers will commence their season-opening trip to Florida with games against top-flight Division II foes such as Lynn (March 17) and Nova Southeastern (March 20). Upon their return home, they will host nationally ranked Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (March 25) and open their New Jersey Athletic Conference schedule at home against New Jersey City (March 27). Senior shortstop Dan Suarez and senior outfielder Bryan Graham pace a strong hitting attack.

Softball Look Ahead

William Paterson’s sojourn to the Sunshine State, where it will play Division III powers such as Coe (March 22) in the Rebel Spring Games at Ocoee, FL, will help get its four new starters acclimated to an elite level of competition. The Pioneers could help head coach Hallie Cohen win her 400th game on the trip with strong performances from seniors Liz Carroll, Morgan Dunlap and Katie Morris.
