William Paterson University
Will Host The 67th Annual North Jersey Spelling Bee, Presented By
The Record And Herald News
The 67th annual North Jersey Spelling Bee, an event, that promotes
middle school students’ communication skills and interest
in word usage, will be presented at William Paterson University
in Wayne. The final spelling bee will be held on March 22 at 6:00
p.m. in the Machuga Student Center Ballroom.

Alumni Present Lecture on Campus

in the television industry spoke on campus on March 8 as part
of the ongoing Alumni Lecture Series. Present at the event were

who acted as moderator; Mark Koszaki ’79, senior vice
president, Discovery Networks, USA; and Susan Lisovicz ’78,

Lanford Wilson’s
Drama,“The Rimers Of Eldritch,” on Stage at William
Paterson University April 15 to April 20
“The Rimers of Eldritch,” Lanford Wilson’s dramatic
murder mystery, will be presented at William Paterson University’s
Shea Center for Performing Arts in Wayne from April 15 to 20. Jerry

History Month: Sister Souljah, a rapper and community activist,
(center) was the keynote speaker for the Sister to Sister conference
“Acknowledging the Queen Within: Uplifting Ourselves by
Conquering Our Fears.” The event was held on March 6 in
the Machuga Student Center Ballroom on campus. With her are

University to Hold Writer's
Conference in April
Brian Henry and Andrew Zawacki, co-editors of
Verse, a magazine known for its eclectic approach and international
scope, will appear as special guests at William Paterson University’s
annual Spring Writer’s Conference on Saturday, April 17. (More

Achievements
Zhiyuan Cong, art,
is part of a group exhibit, “The Apparent Intersection of
Near and Far: International Perspectives in Contemporary Art from
New Jersey,” at the Hunterdon Museum of Art in Clinton, which
runs from March 7 to May 16. He will also conduct a workshop on
Chinese ink painting at the museum on April 3…Martin
Hahn, biology, has been named an associate editor of Behavior
Genetics, the official journal of the Behavior Genetics Association.
The journal publishes peer-reviewed articles about the interrelationship
of genetics and behavior and its implications for health and human
development and education. As an editor, Hahn will send out manuscripts
for peer review and then work with the authors to make the submissions
ready for inclusion into the publication. Basically, he says, “What
I do is in keeping with the philosophy of the journal, and that’s
to work with authors and encourage them to work within the process
to publish their work. I’m honored to do this job for my association”…Members
of the Department of Sociology, recently attended the 74th
annual meeting of the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS) in New
York City. Chris Donoghue, presented
the results of his investigation of “The Effects of Payment
Type Mix and Other Nursing Home Characteristics on the Quality of
Care Using National Level Data.” Also presenting papers were
Howard Lune and Enrique
Pumar, along with Brian Forsythe,
a student, who presented at a session called “Think Anti-Globally,
Act Locally.” Jim Mahon, executive
director of ESS, was co-leader for two workshops on best teaching
practices. Peter Stein, was a panelist
for the Plenary Session, “Celebrating Careers: Teaching and
the Sociological Imagination. Graduate student Sarah
Murray presented a paper on “False Confession and the
Suspect with Mental Retardation and Max Probst,
also a graduate student, reported on “Attitudes Toward Lesbian,
Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered People on a Northern New Jersey
College Campus” …Virginia Overdorf,
exercise and movement sciences, has been appointed president of
the National Association of Kinesiology and Physical Education in
Higher Education for a three-year term. As president, she is charged
with increasing membership in the organization, and will “build
bridges and work together in the promotion of physical activity
as a solution to many of society’s current problems including
chronic diseases and obesity,” she says.

Art Exhibits at William Paterson University Focus
on Wearable and Unwearable Art and Quilts

Wearable art and quilts
are the focus of two new exhibits, “Crossing
the Line: Wearable to Unwearable,” and “American
Art Quilts,” a juried exhibit of works by 35 artists from
across the United States. Both are on view at William Paterson University’s
Ben Shahn Galleries from March 22 through April 16. Gallery hours
are Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is free.
A closing reception for the exhibit will be held on Wednesday, April
14 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.

Hosts 2004 Music and
Entertainment Industry Associations’ Educator’s Conference
Topics ranging from “The Truth About Downloading”
“to “Music Copyright Do’s, Don’ts, Myths
and Maybes” will be discussed at this year’s Music and
Entertainment Industry Educators Association (MEIEA) Conference,
hosted by William Paterson University, on April 2 and 3, 2004.
The two-day conference, held with its student organization, the
Music and Entertainment Industry Student Association (MEISA), will
be held on Friday, April 2 at The Supper Club in New York City,
and on Saturday, April 3 at William Paterson University in Wayne,
N.J. A special guest speaker is expected to be announced. (More

George Tice Presents Retrospective in
Cheng Library

Tice discussed his body of work during a lecture sponsored by
the David and Lorraine Cheng Library’s Friends of the
Library on March 7. Tice also donated an original work, Joe’s
Barbershop, to the library. |

Poet Meena Alexander Reads
From Her Works

| As part of the University’s observance
of Women’s History Month, the poet Meena Alexander read
from her book, Fault Lines, on March 9 in the Machuga
Student Center Ballroom. Alexander is a professor of English
at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University
of New York. She is the author of several books of poetry, most
recently Illiterate Heart, winner of the 2002 PEN Open
Book award. |

Achievements
Chris Ferrone, who
graduated in January with a bachelor’s degree in science,
recently received a certificate for Outstanding Physical Education
major of the year from the National Association of Sport and Physical
Education (NASPE), a nonprofit professional organization. This national
award is offered to juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 or higher,
who have provided service to their schools or communities. Abigail
Ferris, a senior, was honored as Outstanding Future Professional
from the Eastern District Association of the National Alliance of
Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Dance, whose main
goal is to enhance the professional growth and development of its
members.

Darci Gresko (from left) received
first place honors and Charleen Hunt, Christopher Mulligan
and Jedidiha Quijano won second place at the 6th Annual Undergraduate
Research Symposium in the Chemical and Biological Sciences,
which was held at the University of Maryland/Baltimore County
on November 1. Through the use of posters, the students presented
their findings on simple system DNA replication in front of
a committee of judges. They were each awarded a plaque and
a $50 dollar gift certificate from Barnes & Noble.

Swimming and Diving in Review
Sophomore Kristin Clegg completed her season at the NCAA Division
III Swimming and Diving Championships held March 11-13 at Principia
College in St. Louis. Clegg finished 17th in the 200-yard backstroke
in 2:08.98. She also placed 21st in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.27).
Overall, the Pioneer men finished with a record of 9-3 and the women
concluded 8-6. (More

Women’s Basketball in Review

The Pioneers (18-11) concluded their most successful
season since 1999-2000 by earning a spot in the New Jersey Athletic
Conference Tournament championship game and reaching the Eastern
Collegiate Athletic Conference Metro Region semifinals. They will
return 10 players to next year’s squad (six freshmen, three
sophomores and a junior), including freshman guard Luci Custis (10.8
ppg, 5.9 rpg), a three-time NJAC Rookie of the Week honoree. (More

Baseball Look Ahead

The Pioneers won four of their first five
games at the 2004 Clearwater Invitational and will look to build
upon that success. After facing national power Johns Hopkins on
March 16 in St. Petersburg, FL, the Pioneers play five more games
in the Sunshine State before returning home on Tuesday, March 23,
at 3:00 p.m. against Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Juniors Jeremy
Winter (.500, 7 RBI) and Joe Hernandez (.478, 6 2B, 7 R) lead the
offense, while juniors Jake Pravkewitz and Dan Sweeney each won
their first starts. Senior Mat Sackman already has two saves.

The Pioneers, ranked No. 18 in the National Fastpitch
Coaches Association Division III preseason poll, opened their season
with victories over Endicott (MA) and Macalester (MN) on Sunday,
March 14, at the Rebel Spring Games in Ocoee, FL. Sophomore righty
Jenn Scott, who helped William Paterson win the 2003 New Jersey
Athletic Conference championship, won both games.
