William Paterson University to Host Conference on Terrorism

A two-day international conference designed to open a discussion about the global effects of terrorism on democracy will be held on April 13 and 14 at William Paterson University on the campus in Wayne. (More Information)



Author Talks About Success During Videoconference

Jack Canfield, author of Chicken Soup for the Soul

Jack Canfield, successful author of the famous series of books which started with Chicken Soup for the Soul, delivered a lecture on campus on February 15 that was inspirational yet also pragmatic as he encouraged those in the audience to pursue their dreams. He based his talk on his most recent book, The Success Principles, a book about how people can get what they want out of life by identifying goals, and then working to accomplish those goals. The lecture was a live videoconference produced by the Society of Success and Leadership for college students, and was part of a seven lecture series made available to the campus at the Martini Teleconference Center. The event was sponsored by Campus Activities and Student Leadership. The next lecture, to be videocast on March 29 at 7:45 p.m. will feature Stephen Covey, author of the book The Seven Principles of Highly Effective People.

150th ANNIVERSARY TRIVIA CONTEST

Georgette Klemchalk Lentz ’68 , adjunct professor of mathematics, is the winner of the March 1 efocus contest. She was the first person to respond with the correct answer: The professor processing paperwork during registration circa 1960 is John Rosengren. “Dr. John Rosengren taught me ‘Plant and Animal Biology’ in Spring 1965. He was an absolutely fantastic and fabulous professor!!! He taught us well and held the ‘education bar’ very, very high!” she says.



Saxophonist Joe Lovano Joins the William Paterson University Jazz Ensemble for Jazz Room Series on April 17 at 4:00 p.m.

Joe Lovano, a Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, will perform with the William Paterson Jazz Ensemble at William Paterson University in Wayne on Sunday, April 17 as part of the winter 2005 Jazz Room Series. (More Information)

William Paterson University Presents Tony Award-Winner, Proof, From April 5 To 9

William Paterson University in Wayne will present a production of Proof, David Auburn’s drama, from April 5 to 9 in the Hunziker Black Box Theatre on campus. “Proof” was the 2001 Tony Award winner for best play and won the 2001 Pulitzer Prize for drama.

American Democracy Project at William Paterson University to Celebrate Public Education with a Series of Events March 22 to 30
—Performances and lectures to focus on role of public education in a democracy

A series of events designed to celebrate and highlight the important role of public education in a democratic society will be held at William Paterson University in Wayne from March 22 to 30. The events, part of the University’s year-long celebration of its 150th anniversary in 2005, are sponsored by the American Democracy Project of William Paterson University, part of a nationwide initiative by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) that seeks to increase civic engagement levels of U.S. students attending public colleges and universities in the 21st century. BP Lubricants USA Inc. has donated $60,000 to William Paterson University’s Christos M. Achievements

Of Thee I Sing, a collection of poetry by Timothy Liu, English, has been selected as Book of the Year, Poetry, by Publishers WeeklyElaine Lorenz, art, has been awarded a $75,000 commission from the New Jersey Meadowlands Commission to create a site-specific sculpture for DeKorte Park at the New Jersey Environmental Center in Lyndhurst. Her work, titled Earth Spiral, will consist of an 18-foot ascending spiral labyrinth of leaning concrete forms containing earth and juniper bushes. Her work will be the first in a planned sculpture garden there…A film by Gina Guerrieri, communication, tied for first place in the short film category of the 2005 United States Super 8 Film and Digital Video Festival held in February at Rutgers University. The 12-minute film, titled A Close Call, will be screened in April at the 38th Annual WorldFest in Houston and the New River International Film Festival in Blacksburg, Virginia, and at the FirstGlance 8 Philadelphia Film Festival in May…Ming Fay, art, will present a site-specific installation at the Kresge Gallery at Ramapo College from April 1 through May 6. Titled Ramapo Garden of Desire, the installation will feature jungle-like sculptures based on plant forms suspended from the ceiling…Vincent Parrillo, sociology, has been named the Robin M. Williams Jr. Distinguished Lecturer for 2005-2006 by the Eastern Sociological Society (ESS). He is the first scholar ever selected from New Jersey for this honor. Parrillo will present two lectures on campuses in the ESS region during his term of appointment.

Clegg Earns All-American Honors Twice at NCAA Swimming Championships

Kristin Clegg

Junior Kristin Clegg is now a five-time All-American after finishing among the Top 16 at the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships held March 10-12 in Holland, MI. Clegg earned a medal by finishing seventh in the 100-yard backstroke while also placing 14th in the 200-yard backstroke. Previously, she was a 2003 All-American in the 200-yard backstroke and a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Academic All-American in 2003 and 2004.

Baseball Look Ahead

After completion of their spring trip to the Clearwater (FL) Invitational, the Pioneers (1-3) will play six of their next seven games at renovated Wightman Park. Senior catcher Anthony Mazzo (.563, 2 HR, 9 RBI) will be one to watch when his team takes on national powers Rensselaar Polytechnic Institute on Friday, March 25, at 1:00 p.m. and SUNY Cortland on Saturday, March 26, at 11:30 a.m. (doubleheader).

Sophomore designated player Liz Sisca (.500, HR, 6 RBI) has continued the strong hitting that made her the 2004 NJAC Rookie of the Year as the Pioneers (3-1), ranked No. 21 in Division III, have looked impressive early. They will finish play at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, FL, before opening play at home on Wednesday, March 23, against Wilkes University at 3:00 p.m.
