Conference on Globalization to be Held at William Paterson University
Former U.S. Ambassador to Sri Lanka to speak

Teresita C. Schaffer, former U.S. ambassador to Sri Lanka and director of the South Asia program center for strategic and international studies, will address the effect of the changing global economy at a conference at William Paterson University in Wayne on Thursday, April 28 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. in the 1600 Valley Road building. The event, titled “Global Issues,” is sponsored by the University’s Christos M. Cotsakos College of Business. Admission is free and open to the public. (More Information)


The High Mountain Symphony Presents its Season Finale on April 30

The High Mountain Symphony at William Paterson University will present “The Sound of Pictures,” a program that includes Ravel’s arrangement of Mussorgsky’s “Pictures at an Exhibition.” The 2005 Mae and Fletcher Fish Young Artist Competition finalists will also perform on Saturday, April 30 at 8:00 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. 150th ANNIVERSARY TRIVIA CONTEST

This Trivia Contest is part of the University’s 150th Anniversary celebration. There will be one question per issue dealing with the history of the institution. Responses should be sent to the efocus mailbox at efocus@wpunj.edu. The first correct response will be declared the winner and will receive a prize. Only one prize will be awarded per issue. Answers will be published in the next issue. This month we are publishing a photo for identification:

Q: After the Paterson State Normal School moved to the Wayne campus in 1951, a library was housed in East Hall, now called Hobart Manor. In 1955, a new library was built, and students showed their school spirit by carrying books to the new facility. Library resources at that time included 28,500 books, 6,000 pamphlets, and other educational materials. About 250 periodicicals and ten newspapers were received regularly. The staff consisted of four professional librarians to serve 823 students. This library was named after Sarah Byrd Askew. Who was she?

B. New Jersey’s first professional librarian

C. The first librarian at the Paterson Normal School

Courage is Topic of Lecture

Ben Shahn Galleries Focuses on Printmaking

“American Impressions 2005,” a juried exhibit of works by 33 professional printmakers from across the United States, is on view through April 22 in the Ben Shahn Galleries on campus. The show includes a variety of printmaking media, including woodcut, etching, monotype/monoprint, lithography, intaglio, silkscreen, and processes involving photography-derived imagery and digital collage.  Also on exhibit is a site-specific installation by 81-year-old Montclair artist Miriam Beerman, the grand prize winner of last year’s printmaking exhibit.  Titled “To the Brim of Memory,” the exhibit features collages using drawings, prints, altered photos and found objects that focus on the concepts of memory, mystery and the afterlife. Eleanor Roosevelt Scholar Presents Lecture

William Paterson University Foundation Raises  $128,500 for Scholarships at Annual Legacy Award Dinner

The William Paterson University Foundation raised $128,500 for its scholarship fund during the Foundation’s 15th annual Legacy Award Dinner and Silent/Live Auction held on April 9 at The Villa at Mountain Lakes.  Three hundred sixty guests were in attendance, making this year’s dinner the largest and most successful in the history of the event. Passaic County Historian Presents Lecture on the Founding of William Paterson University

Edward Smyk, the Passaic County historian, will present a lecture titled “The Men and Women Who Helped Create William Paterson University” on Thursday, April 28 at 2:00 p.m. in the Martini Teleconference Center in Hobart Hall.  The event is sponsored by the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and is part of the University’s celebration of its 150th anniversary during 2005.

Smyk is the author of Historic Passaic County:  An Illustrated History.  A trustee of the Passaic County Historical Society, Smyk has been affiliated with the Society since 1962. In 1987, he was presented with the New Jersey Local Historians’ Award of Distinction by the New Jersey Historical Commission, the New Jersey Historical Society, and the League of Historical Societies of New Jersey.

William Paterson University Celebrates Earth Day

A number of events will be held on campus on Friday, April 22 to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Earth Day.

The Department of Environmental Science and Geography will present a series of events from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in Science Hall Room 319.  Activities include an all-day film festival, including Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring, Soylent Green, and Jane Goodall:  Reason for Hope.  Donald Hirsch ’88 and John Zuzeck of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection will discuss “Environmental Enforcement in New Jersey;” Yuri Gorokovich, adjunct assistant professor of earth and environmental engineering at Columbia University, will speak about “Environmental Science Experiences.”  Other events include a guided hike on High Mountain and a boat excursion on Oldham Pond.  Lunch will be served at noon at Science Hall.  All events are free.  For information, contact David Stern, assistant professor of environmental science and geography, at x3409 or via e-mail at sternd@wpunj.edu.

Art major Sharon Ronk will present a fine art fashion show and gallery exhibit titled “Fashion Pollution:  A New Vision of Contamination in Fine Art Fashion” at 8:00 p.m. in the Power Art Gallery.  Ronk will present a collection of her hand-made garments/wearable sculptures, as well as her sketches for the designs, which are inspired by elements of pollution such as smog, trash and oil and chemical spills.  A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology with an associate’s degree in fashion design, Ronk is a senior pursuing a bachelor of fine arts with a concentration in textile design. The Pioneers (9-8, 1-4 NJAC) are working to qualify for their 14th consecutive conference tournament. The offense of senior designated hitter Jeremy Winter (.423, HR, 19 RBI) will be key in an upcoming home game against backyard rival Montclair State on Thursday, April 21 at
3:30 p.m. as well as a road doubleheader at Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, April 23 at noon.

In addition to the slugging of sophomore first baseman/designated player  Liz Sisca (.425, 8 2B, 8 HR, 21 RBI, .918 slugging %), named NJAC Player of the Week on April 11, junior catcher Mindy Coxe (.405, 2 HR, 21 RBI) has been on a hitting tear for the Pioneers (20-5, 3-3 NJAC). The team faces pivotal conference doubleheaders ahead at home against The College of New Jersey on Saturday, April 23 at 1:00 p.m., Ramapo on Tuesday, April 26 at 3:00 p.m. and Rutgers-Camden on Saturday, April 30 at 1:00 p.m. (More Information)

Softball’s Sisca Sets School Home Run Record

With one mighty swing, sophomore first baseman/designated player Liz Sisca became William Paterson softball’s all-time home run leader – in only 56 games. She claimed the record with a solo shot against Manhattanville on April 10.

"I saw in the game program that I was close to the record and people have been saying to me that I was going to break it,” said Sisca, the 2004 New Jersey Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week, afterward. “It wasn’t something that was on my mind, but it is definitely a relief to do it so that people stop talking about it."
