Internationally Recognized Scholar to Give Annual Jefferson Lecture at William Paterson University

Ralph Ketcham, professor emeritus, Syracuse University, and an internationally recognized scholar of early American history, will present the 19th annual Abram Kartch/Thomas Jefferson Lecture at William Paterson University in Wayne on Wednesday, May 7. (More Information)




University Sponsors Gala Event for Staff

In an effort to recognize the more than 500 classified employees (clerical and administrative support staff, custodial and maintenance workers, and security and police officers) who assist the institution in meeting its mission of student success through service excellence, the University will hold a gala event as the SS William Paterson embarks on a special cruise.

"Charting the Course for Academic Success through Service Excellence" will sail on May 21 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the Valley Road Building Cafeteria and Terrace which will be temporarily transformed into a cruise ship to fit the theme of the celebration.
Guests will have the opportunity to visit a casino and play various card games, listen to a steel band, enjoy lawn games and be entertained by clowns, musicians and Karaoke. Refreshments will be served.

"The annual recognition event is a thank you on behalf of the president and the provost for the completion of another successful academic year," says Rafael Valentin, associate vice president, human resources. "This year we decided to do something different. A committee of 45 faculty, directors and support staff is coordinating the entire event from publicity to organizing entertainment and fund raising. Everyone should come and have a real good time."

Two New Honor Societies Formed on Campus

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences added two new honor societies as students majoring in French and Francophone studies and Spanish were inducted into established national honor programs.

University students who have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher are eligible to be inducted into the honor societies.

Fourteen students enrolled in French and Francophone studies were inducted into the Nu Theta chapter of Pi Delta Phi, the National French Honor Society. Madhuri Mukherjee, assistant professor, languages and cultures, is the French honor society advisor.

The Phi Etta chapter of Sigma Delta Phi, the National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society, inducted 18 Spanish students into the chapter. Maria Tajes, assistant professor, languages and cultures, is the Spanish honor society advisor.

University Celebrates 177th Commencement on May 21

William Paterson University in Wayne will hold its 177th commencement on Tuesday, May 20, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. on Wightman Field on campus. The rain date is Wednesday, May 21, also at 10:30 a.m. Eileen Scott, CEO of Pathmark Stores, Inc. and a 1976 graduate of William Paterson, to give the commencement address. Sr. Patricia Daly, social justice activist, and George Tice, internationally acclaimed photographer, to receive honorary degrees. (More Information).

Reminder: Legacy Award Dinner is May 10

There is still time to reserve tickets for the 13th Annual Legacy Award Dinner and Silent Auction, to be held on Saturday, May 10 at The Hilton at Short Hills.

The event, which recognizes the achievements of alumni, corporate and community leaders, and faculty, is hosted by the William Paterson University Foundation and benefits the Foundation’s Scholarship Fund. William Paterson University Hosts 22nd Annual National History Day for New Jersey Students
--University President Arnold Speert to Receive Award


Students in grades six through 12 from New Jersey public and private schools will participate in this year’s New Jersey National History Day competition on Saturday, May 3 at William Paterson University in Wayne. (More Information).



Carmina Burana to be Performed at University on May 6


The William Paterson University Chorus and the William Paterson University Chamber Singers will present a spring concert featuring Carl Orff’s "Carmina Burana" on Tuesday, May 6 at 8 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the University campus in Wayne. (More Information).

The University’s Alumni Association sponsored a lecture on April 10 featuring Toni Fiore ’76 (right), executive vice president, for patient care and chief nursing officer at Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC), and Stephanie Goldberg ‘81 (second from left), vice president, nursing, HUMC. With them are University President Arnold Speert (right), and Julie Bliss, chairperson of the Department of Nursing. They spoke about the importance of nursing in today’s healthcare environment.

Baseball Coach Albies Notches Career Win No. 775

Jeff Albies added another accomplishment to a career full of them on Monday, April 28, when he captured career win No. 775 as William Paterson defeated New Jersey City, 23-14. Albies, in his 29th year as Pioneers’ coach, is among the Top 10 active Division III coaches in victories.

Kszepka Captures NJAC Softball Player of the Week Honor

Senior pitcher/designated player Sam Kszepka, the reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference Player of the Year, captured the NJAC Player of the Week award on April 21. She batted .421 with a homer and nine RBI, while going 2-0 and allowing just two hits in 12 shutouts innings for the week ending April 20.

 

Softball Look Ahead

Senior middle infielders Pam Migliaccio (.368, 23 R) and Katie Morris (.304, 11 2B, 3 HR, 15 RBI) will try to lead the No. 2 Pioneers (23-9-1, 12-5-1 NJAC) past No. 3 Montclair State in the first round of the NJAC Tournament on Thursday, May 1, at Ramapo College in Mahwah. The tournament champion earns automatic entry into the NCAA Division III Tournament. Senior right-hander Diane Catalano (9-4, 1.31 ERA) has been one of the team’s most consistent pitchers down the stretch.

Baseball’s Graham Sets Career Doubles Record

Senior right fielder Bryan Graham became William Paterson’s all-time leader in career doubles when he hit his 51st in a doubleheader against The College of New Jersey on April 27. He eclipsed the previous record of 50, set by Paul Bumbaco from 1993-96. (More Information)

William Paterson (20-12, 8-7 NJAC) is looking to win its first New Jersey Athletic Conference Tournament since 1997 when the No. 4 seed plays No. 1-seeded Rowan on Friday, May 2, at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University. The winner of the NJAC Tournament earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Division III Tournament. Senior center fielder Ron Hayward (.404, 38 R, HR, 22 RBI, 26 SB) is making a strong case for All-American and All-Mid Atlantic Region honors, as is senior right fielder Bryan Graham (.456, 33 R, 13 2B, 3 3B, 3 HR, 36 RBI).



Track and Field Look Ahead

The Pioneers will compete in the New Jersey Athletic Conference Championship Meet on Saturday, May 3, at Richard Stockton College in Pomona before taking part in the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Championships at Springfield (MA) College on Saturday, May 10. Sophomore Lisa Welch has excelled in the shot put and discus and hammer throws for the women’s team, while the men’s team has been led by junior Brad Gatens (distance running) and freshmen William Bradley (weight throws) and Michael Carrero (javelin throw).
