President Arnold Speert Addresses Faculty and Staff on University Day

William Paterson’s seventh annual University day celebration began with President Arnold Speert’s address to the faculty and staff in Shea Center on Wednesday, September 1.

He touched on many themes in his address but focused on the upcoming 150th anniversary celebration and its many events, while also providing a look ahead into 2005 and various projects planned.

“This is an historic year for William Paterson,” he said. “While we may spend time reflecting on all that’s been accomplished through the years, we also will take advantage of the occasion to explore new initiatives and innovations that, I hope, will become part of the ongoing, vibrant history of the University.” (Complete text of the speech)

Wireless Laptop Computers Now Available to Faculty and Students

A new pilot program sponsored by the Department of Instruction and Research Technology (IRT) offers wireless laptop computers for occasional use to faculty, turning virtually any classroom into a computer lab.

“This program, which is totally new this semester, allows us to meet the needs of faculty who want to build the use of computer technology into their curriculum,” says Sandie Miller, director of IRT.

The wireless laptops are on a self-contained cart which is moved to classrooms as requested. One cart with 24 wireless laptops is available on the main campus; another with 36 laptops is available to classes in the Valley Road building. Faculty who wish to use the laptops may use a request form located on the IRT Website.

Another program offers wireless technology to individual students through Media Services in the Cheng Library. Building on a successful program begun last year with eight wireless laptops, IRT has added an additional eight laptops for a total of 16. Students may check out the laptops for up to three hours for use anywhere in the library.

“This program is very successful,” Miller says. “Last year, during an eight-week period, records show that the eight laptops available were checked out 1,500 times. This year, in the first week of the semester, from September 1 to September 8, the 16 wireless laptops were circulated 56 times.”

In addition to the wireless laptops, students have access to 12 additional “smart” classrooms on the main campus: Science rooms 105, 220, 341, 437 and 526; Wightman Gym 204; Raubinger 212 and 316; Wing 11 and 237; and Hobart 303.

Additional information is available on the IRT Website, irtinfo@wpunj.edu.

In Memoriam
It is with great sadness that we mourn the passing of two members of the University community.

James Williams, associate professor of music and director of the jazz studies program, died in July 2004 at age 53. An internationally acclaimed jazz pianist and composer, Williams performed with a long list of jazz greats, including Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, Joe Henderson, Clark Terry, Chet Baker, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Farmer, Thad Jones, Kenny Burrell, and Freddie Hubbard. He also led his own groups, including Intensive Care Unit, a jazz-gospel ensemble. A member of the William Paterson faculty since 1999, Williams brought jazz legends such as Clark Terry, Billy Taylor, and Pat Metheny to campus, was active in the establishment of the Thad Jones Archive, which houses original manuscripts and arrangements by Jones, and took a central role in the development of the critically acclaimed Jazz Room Series, now entering its 27th season of concerts. “James Williams had a wonderful, rare and unusual combination of qualities: he was the consummate musician and pianist, had a deep soulful commitment to the music and its history, and had the gift of being able to communicate that to students at all levels of experience,” says David Demsey, professor of music and coordinator of jazz studies at William Paterson.

Mark Karp, professor emeritus of reading and language arts, died in July 2004 at age 94. Karp, who joined the institution in 1936 when it was the Paterson State Normal School, retired in 1980. Karp, who was the University’s first full professor of English, also served as the institution’s first dean of freshman studies, as well as associate dean of special services and acting dean of the School of Education. In 1945, he organized the William Paterson’s diagnostic and remedial reading clinic, which continues to ????? Known as an outstanding teacher, he was advisor to the Class of 1948, and advisor to Masque and Masquers, the drama club,
