New Technology Puts Information at Students’ Fingertips

The concept of gathering information into a single unit for ease of use has come to fruition for the University’s students as WPConnect, a new portal which unifies various academic computing resources, came online on September 1, the first day of classes for the fall semester.

“This is an important new tool aimed at promoting student success and productivity,” says Len Bogdon, director of information technology. “WPConnect provides a single point of entry to meet academic information and service needs.”

Students can access the portal through any Web browser. “As soon as students log on, the first thing they see is WPConnect and can access everything they need on campus,” says Sandra Miller, director of instruction and research technology. “This includes academics, student services, student life, Blackboard classes and Outlook e-mail.” Miller describes this as “one-stop shopping.” On the Web site, students can browse through tabs and channels from which they choose information or a service needed. Students can also receive both campus-wide information (campus announcements) or targeted information (personal announcements) such as one for an upcoming special biology lecture targeted only to biology students or one for an unpaid library fines.

“A tab is at the top of the page and, just like folder tabs that separate different folders in a filing cabinet, the tabs separate different Web page views,” Miller explains. “A channel is a window to particular information that is broadcast through the channel via graphics, links, and constantly updated information. Some channels are preset; others are subscribable (like adding The Weather Channel for updated information).”

An added bonus, the portal will allow the ability to form online groups, through a program called Group Studio. “Groups will be able to meet online through an interactive electronic bulletin board and share information, links, photos, etc. e-mail them through the portal. Group meetings can be scheduled through a calendar,” Miller says.

Miller says the feedback from students has been encouraging, and more information is expected to be added to the portal for faculty and staff by fall 2005. “The portal will help us connect with each other from anywhere, at any time.”

Wireless Laptop Computers Now Available to Faculty and Students

An innovative campus program sponsored by the Department of Instruction and Research Technology (IRT) offers wireless laptop computers to faculty, turning virtually any classroom into a computer lab.

“This program, Laptop Classroom, is a pilot program which is totally new this semester. It allows us to meet the needs of faculty who want to build the use of computer technology into their curriculum,” says Sandra Miller, director of IRT.

On the main campus, the Laptop Classroom equipment, 24 wireless laptops, are available in the Curriculum Materials Classroom; another 36 laptops are available to classes in the Valley Road building from Room 1040. Faculty who wish to use the laptops may use a request form located on the IRT Website. Students using the laptops must sign out equipment prior to the class in each location.

Another program, Independent Laptops, offers wireless technology to individual students through Media Services in the Cheng Library. Building on a successful program begun last year with eight wireless laptops, IRT has added an additional eight laptops for a total of 16. Students may check out the laptops for up to three hours for use anywhere in the library.

“This program is very successful,” Miller says. “Last year, during an eight-week period, records show that the eight laptops available were checked out 1,500 times. This year, in the first week of the semester, from September 1 to September 8, the 16 wireless laptops were circulated 56 times.”

In addition to the wireless laptops, students have access to 12 additional “smart” classrooms on the main campus: Science rooms 105, 220, 341, 437 and 526; Wightman Gym 204; Raubinger 212 and 316; Wing 11 and 237; and Hobart 303.

Additional information is available on the IRT Website, http://www.wpunj.edu/irt/ or by calling ext. 2659.

Campus-wide Voter Registration and Education Drive Results in 650
October 4 is Deadline for Voter Registration in New Jersey

More than 650 students have registered to vote as part of a University-wide voter registration and education drive conducted on campus since last spring by Campus Activities and Student Development, the Women’s Center, the Political Science Club, and the American Democracy Project.

Numerous activities have been held on campus to provide students with information on how to register to vote, including sessions during all three orientations for new students during the summer, a Democracy Day as part of Club Fair on September 14, and events held in the residence halls. Most recently, members of the American Democracy Project Committee visited 33 sections of the First Year Seminar to discuss the importance of the youth vote and youth voter turnout and to hand out voter registration materials and applications for absentee ballots.

The deadline for voter registration in New Jersey is October 4. Students can still register by downloading a voter registration application of the New Jersey League for Women Voters at www.lwvnmj.org, which must be sent to the student’s county elections commissioner.
