University Selected to
Participate in American Democracy Project — Initial Forum
Scheduled for Thursday, November 20 at 12:30 p.m.
William Paterson has been invited by the
American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU)
to participate in the American Democracy Project, a national initiative
that seeks to increase civic engagement levels of U.S. students
attending public colleges and universities in the 21st century.
The Project, co-sponsored by The New York Times, is encouraging
member campuses to tailor civic engagement initiatives – both
intellectual and experiential – to the needs and climates
of individual institutions.
To introduce the University’s involvement in the project,
a campus-wide forum for students, faculty and staff will be held
on Thursday, November 20 at 12:30 p.m. in the Cheng Library Auditorium.
The featured speaker will be Kevin Cappallo, director of
educational sales for the New York Times. Following the
speaker, there will be an information session and a campus update
after which audience participation will be encouraged. The
forum is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the Faculty
Senate.
“Our goal is to gather information on all the various programs
already in place on campus that deal with issues of civic engagement,
and to look to further develop academic and co-curriculur programs
that will prepare our students to be active citizens in their communities,”
says Christine Kelly, assistant professor of political science and
program
coordinator for the project on campus. “Active citizenship
is the key to community empowerment.”
Bringing the student development perspective to the William Paterson
project is John Martone, associate vice president and dean of student
development, who works closely with project director Christine Kelly.
At an AASCU meeting for chief academic officers last July, at which
he represented Provost Sesay, the Project was the focus. “Many
of our
students are involved in community service activities such as tutoring
or volunteering for non-profit organizations,” Martone explains.
“As we develop programs unique to our campus through the Project,
my goal is to ensure that students are involved in our community
and in purposeful engagement that leads to ways to improve and perhaps
change public policy.”
A Faculty Senate resolution in October 2000 recommended that civic
participation and
citizenship training be integrated into appropriate general education
courses. The forum will provide an opportunity to discuss
the intent of the resolution within the context of creating a multi-faceted
initiative that will seek to bring together academic departments
and programs, student development and the surrounding community.
The Project will initially involve 144 member campuses of AASCU,
representing more than
1.3 million students. Presidents, chief academic officers,
faculty and students at participating institutions will be linked
together across campuses as the Project moves forward, thus creating
a national conversation on civic engagement.

including an historical perspective and the challenges and opportunities
it presents to world populations. Robinson believes accountability
is key to human rights. "Human rights include the right to food,
safe water, health, education and shelter," she said. "It
comes down to better systems of governance that are seen as holding
leaders accountable for goals they’ve made. The central challenge
is finding ways to build on, connect and bridge divides."
