University Hosts International Education Meeting

President Arnold Speert meets with members of IOHE.

A meeting of the Inter-American Organization for Higher Education (IOHE), an association created to foster the development of higher education in the Americas, was hosted by William Paterson University from November 6-8. Representatives from educational institutions in South America, Mexico and Canada were in attendance.

President Arnold Speert is a vice president representing the United States on IOHE’s board of directors. The University joined IOHE in 1998 as part of its mission to expand international education initiatives.

"Links with Central and South America are critically important to the realities of the Americas. These countries are major contributors to the culture and life experience in the United States today," says Speert. Thirteen percent of the University’s student body is Latino; the University recently launched a major and minor in Latin American studies.

IOHE was created in 1979 as an association of universities that promotes cooperation between member institutions and fosters the development of higher education in the Americas. The IOHE offers a variety of activities primarily through the Institute of University Management and Leadership (IGLU) and the College of the Americas (COLAM). There are currently 400 members of the organization. During their meetings on campus, the board of directors planned for IOHE’s biennial meeting in November 2003, as well as reviewed the accomplishments of
the IGLU and COLAM.
