Renowned Photographer to Speak at William Paterson
George Tice, a photographer
who specializes in New Jersey’s urban and industrial landscapes,
will present "A Retrospective of Fifty Years in Photography"
at William Paterson University in Wayne on December 7 at 2:00 p.m.
in the David and Lorraine Cheng Library Auditorium. (More

William Paterson University Plans Event for
Graduating Students
A Graduation Salute, designed to provide
an opportunity for graduating seniors and graduate students to take
care of their commencement needs at one time and in one location,
will be held on campus at William Paterson University on December
2 and 3 in the Gallery Lounge in the John Victor Machuga Student
Center.
Representatives from a wide variety of University offices, including
alumni relations, career development, graduate services, and the
registrar, will be on hand to answer questions and provide services.
Students graduating in January 2004 are encouraged to participate
and pick up their caps and gowns and invitations and tickets for
commencement, scheduled for January 25. The event is sponsored by
the University and Josten’s.
Hours for the Graduation Salute are 11:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday,
December 2 and 1:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 3. For additional

Lafer Speaks About
Plight of the American Worker

| Dr. Gordon Lafer, a professor at
the University of Oregon’s Labor Education and Research
Center, and a labor activist in that state, spoke on campus
on November 6. In his lecture, he discussed issues of importance
to American workers including problems with job training. "Job
training is a dismal failure," he said. "It doesn’t
work. The government should provide jobs instead." The
event was sponsored by the Department of Political Science through
its Graduate Program in Public Policy and International Affairs.

Holiday Social Set
for December 13
The University’s annual Holiday Social for faculty and staff
will be held on Saturday, December 13, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. in
the Machuga Student Center Ballroom.
The evening will feature great music, dancing, a variety of festive
foods and the chance to celebrate the holiday season with colleagues
and friends. Tickets are $17 per person.
Committee co-chairs are Maryann Padula, Provost’s Office,
Marion Turkish, Elementary and Early Childhood Education, Donna
Santaniello, President’s Office, Lois Wolf, Political Science,
and Sue Tardi, Sociology. The event is sponsored by the President’s

William Paterson
University Presents Jack Frost II
Jack Frost II, a sequel
to last year’s sell-out hit, will be staged on December 7
at 2:00 p.m. at William Paterson University in Wayne, presented
by Connecticut Children’s Theatre (formally ACME Performing
Arts), a family-oriented performance group. The show will be held

Forensic Scientist
Presents Lecture

the cast members on CBS’s hit show CSI, Donna
Fontana is a forensic anthropologist. On a visit to campus on
November 6, she spoke to students in Science 200A about her
sometimes grisly job in forensics with the Missing Persons Unit
of the New Jersey State Police. Called in to identify bodies,
she said she uses many clues, including clothes and jewelry
as in years past, but uses DNA to more successfully determine
the cause of death. |

Seniors Honored at University's
Annual Thanksgiving Dinner
On November 15, almost 400 senior citizens
from northern New Jersey attended the University's Sixth Annual
Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner held in the Machuga Student
Center Ballroom on campus.
The purpose of the dinner is to recognize the contributions of senior
citizens in their respective communities and demonstrate the University's
commitment to serving its surrounding communities.
In addition to a traditional turkey dinner, guests enjoyed entertainment
by the William Paterson Gospel Choir, the Wayne Senior Swing Band,
and dance experts Robert Sweeney and Rebecca Reid. More than 150
volunteers, including William Paterson faculty, staff and students,
assisted with the event.

| Recipients of the University’s Lifetime
Achievement Awards, presented annually to senior citizens who
have made significant contributions to the community, are pictured
with University President Arnold Speert (left). The honorees
are (from left) Sarah Rodriguez-Martinez, a teacher in the Paterson
School District and a professor of English as a Second Language
at Passaic County Community College; Blonnie R. Watson, a current
Freeholder in Essex County and retired postal worker, who actively
works for affordable housing for senior citizens; Yolanda Esquiche,
co-founder of the Peruvian-American Teacher’s Association,
and a certified social worker and a substance abuse counselor
at St. Joseph’s Hospital; Dolores Most, recently retired
investigator with the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office,
who was one of only four women among 400 males in the office;
Virginia Charlotte Cobb, retired from the Passaic County Purchasing
Department, former committee woman in the First Ward in Passaic,
and active in the Head Start Program and the NAACP; and George
J. Homcy, a former journalist with the Paterson Evening News,
member of the North Jersey Chamber of Commerce among other community
organizations, and executive director of the Nicholas Martini
Foundation. Also receiving an award but not pictured is the
Honorable James J. Murner, who served as a municipal and presiding
judge in the Passaic County Vicinage. |

Airlines Arena on Saturday, Dec. 13, against the U.S. Merchant Marine

as NJAC Offensive Rookie of the Week
William Paterson University freshman quarterback Rob Garczynski
became the sixth Pioneer rookie to earn a weekly honor when he was
feted as the New Jersey Athletic Conference Offensive Rookie of
the Week after throwing for 138 yards in the season finale against
Rowan University on Nov. 7.

Preview
With nine key returnees from a team that finished
second in the highly competitive New Jersey Athletic Conference,

The Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving
Teams compete at New York Maritime on Thursday, Nov. 20, before
returning home two days later for a 1:00 p.m. match against Lehman
to conclude their November schedule. Junior Steve Pappendick (sprints)
and Billy Schreyer (sprints/distance) lead the men's team (2-1),
while junior Heidi Koeppel (freestyle/backstroke) and sophomore
All-American Kristin Clegg (backstroke, freestyle sprints) lead
the women (1-2).

To build support for the upcoming season,
the William Paterson men's and women's basketball programs will hold
their annual "Hoops Mania" on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the

Nov. 22, in the first round of the Skidmore College Tournament.
From there, the Pioneers open their conference schedule at Rutgers-Newark
on Tuesday, Nov. 25, at 5:30 p.m. Senior guard Kat McPhail (15.3
ppg) enters the season 99 points away from becoming the 16th player
in school history to score 1,000 points.

Notice
Department of Public Safety: The
Safe Ride program is a free service for students on campus. The
program offers escorts from 11:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. seven days a
week. A 15-passenger shuttle van is used. The shuttle is equipped
with a two-way radio and is in contact with police headquarters
at all times. The shuttle is being outfitted with green overhead
lights for additional visibility. Currently, the shuttle is providing
approximately 450 escorted rides per week.
