Former Attorney General Janet Reno and Former Secretary of Defense Frank R. Gaffney Jr. to Speak at William Paterson University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series

Janet Reno, the first woman attorney general of the U.S., and Frank R. Gaffney Jr., a former assistant secretary of defense during the Reagan administration, will discuss “The Patriot Act: Liberty versus Security” on December 3 as part of William Paterson University’s Distinguished Lecturer Series. Patterson, Lauterhahns to be Inducted Into Hall of Fame on Nov. 15

Men's basketball player Tommie Patterson ('94) and the father-son baseball duo of assistant coach Bob Lauterhahn and his son, Dan ('02), will be inducted into the William Paterson University Alumni Association Athletic Hall of Fame on Monday, Nov. 15, at the Madison Hotel in Morristown, NJ. Holiday Social Set for December 4

The University’s annual Holiday Social for faculty and staff will be held on Saturday, December 4, from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. in a new location this year, the Café at 1600 Valley Road.

The evening will feature great music, dancing, a variety of festive foods and the chance to celebrate the holiday season with colleagues and friends. Tickets are $17 per person. Because the Café can only seat 120 people, tickets should be reserved early.

Committee co-chairs are Maryann Padula, Provost’s Office, Donna Santaniello, President’s Office, Marion Turkish, Elementary and Early Childhood Education, and Sue Tardi, Sociology. The event is sponsored by the President’s Office.

William Paterson University to Host Annual Thanksgiving Dinner for Senior Citizens on November 20

More than 350 senior citizens from northern New Jersey are expected to attend William Paterson University's Seventh Annual Senior Citizens Thanksgiving Dinner on Saturday, November 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at The Brownstone in Paterson.

as part of its outreach to the community.

University Observes International World AIDS Day on December 1

An exhibit of portions of the AIDS quilt, and a candlelight ceremony will mark the University’s observance of International World AIDS Day on December 1.

Portions of the AIDS Memorial quilt, begun in 1987 as a remembrance of those who had died of AIDS and now far too big to be shown in one place, will be displayed on campus in the Atrium Lobby during the day. Tables will be set up from noon to 2:00 p.m. with information about the quilt staffed by peer educators and other staff members. HIV testing will be available from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Appointments must be made by calling the Health and Wellness Center at x2360.

A candlelight ceremony will begin at 4:45 p.m. in the Atrium. Members of the campus community will have the opportunity to share their thoughts about friends and loved ones who are infected with the disease or have succumbed to it. The observance will then move outside where candles will be lit.

William Paterson Plans Event for Graduating Students

A Graduation Salute, designed to provide an opportunity for graduating seniors to take care of their commencement needs at one time and one location, will be held on Tuesday, November 30 and Wednesday, December 1, 2004 in Shea Auditorium.

Representatives from a wide variety of University offices, including alumni relations, career development, financial aid, graduate services, and the registrar, will be on hand to answer questions and provide services. Students graduating in January 2005 are encouraged to participate and pick up their caps and gowns and invitations and tickets for commencement, scheduled for Sunday, January 23. The event is sponsored by the University and Josten’s.

Stand-Up Comedy Workshop to be Held at William Paterson University

William Paterson University is offering a stand-up comedy workshop for people 14 years of age and older who wish to study, write and perform stand-up comedy. The class begins on November 20 with additional sessions on December 4, 11, 18, and January 8 and a final performance on January 15. Classes are held from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. on the campus in Wayne. William Paterson University Choir Presents Concert on December 7

The William Paterson University Choir and the William Paterson University Chamber Singers will present a winter concert featuring Mozart’s “Solemn Vespers” on Tuesday, December 7 at 8L99 p.m. in the Shea Center for Performing Arts on the campus in Wayne. Admission is free. (More Information)

Cross Country in Review

The Pioneer men’s team completed its season at the ECAC Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships on Nov. 6. Freshman Michael Mezejewski finished 65th out of 243 runners in a time of 29:03. Along with sophomore Brian White and freshmen Edwin Pagan and Charles Raphael, he gives the Pioneers the foundation for future success. (More Information)



Football Wrap-Up

William Paterson (2-8, 1-5 NJAC) ended its season with a 12-9 loss at Husson (ME) on Nov. 13. Freshman WR Kareen Moon (43 receptions, 644 yards, 6 TDs) emerged as a top-flight pass catcher, while junior RB Prince Breeden (24.5 yard-per-return average) became one of the top kick returners in the country. Also, sophomore FB Thomas Murphy (384 yards rushing) emerged late in the season.

Women’s Soccer Places Six on All-NJAC Squad

Three William Paterson University women’s soccer players were selected to the All-NJAC second team and three others earned honorable mention when the all-star teams were announced on Nov. 11. (More Information)

Field Hockey in Review

William Paterson (12-5, 4-2 NJAC) earned its second consecutive postseason appearance, but lost to Alvernia, 5-0, in the first round of the ECAC Field Hockey Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship on Nov. 10. It did not diminish a season in which the Pioneers placed three players on the All-New Jersey Athletic Conference first team: seniors Kelly Harchetts and Cheryl Naurath and junior Mindy Coxe.

The Pioneers (24-10, 4-3) reached the NJAC Tournament semifinals for the third consecutive season and tied for the second most victories in school history thanks to the play of junior Lauren Shears, who earned her third consecutive selection to the all-conference first team. Shears ranked seventh in Division III in kills per game (5.04) and also averaged 4.12 digs per game.
