and business students listen to Bob Oberosler, vice president
of operations, Pathmark, as he explains new technology used
in the stores. |
Eileen Scott, the chief executive officer of Pathmark,
and members of Pathmark’s senior management team, gave a class
of 25 students a first-hand look at the management of a supermarket
during a special session of a William Paterson University retail
management course in the Parsippany Pathmark store on December 8.
The course is an elective offered as part of the marketing concentration
of the University’s bachelor of science degree in business
administration.
“The site visits provide the students with an opportunity
to hear directly from managers and other executives about that particular
industry, the issues they focus on and the challenges they face
in what is today a very competitive retail landscape,” says
William E. Matthews, professor of marketing and management sciences.
The Pathmark session included a store tour, as well as discussions
of site selection, marketing and advertising competition, layout
and merchandising to maximize sales profits, and operational challenges.
Joining Scott was John Derderian, senior vice president, advertising
and market research; Bob Oberosler, senior vice president, store
operations; Peter Carpena, director, store merchandising and planning;
Carney Siciliano, district manager; Ian Loudon, district manager;
and Art Gonnoud, general store manager. Also on hand was Ed Spitaletta,
president of Shelf Tech Inc.
Both Scott and Spitaletta graduated from William Paterson in 1976.
Derderian is a 1980 graduate of the University.

IRT Trains
High School Teachers for Upcoming Model Congress
 |
The staff from Instruction
and Research Technology recently hosted a training session for teachers
from high schools in Passaic County who will serve as advisors for
a High School Model Congress to take place on campus in May 2004.
The advisors will work with 175 students from 21 Passaic County
high schools who will participate in the event, which will be hosted
by the University and the Herald
News.
The IRT staff introduced the teachers to the Blackboard Course Management
System, which they will use to develop bills and legislation for
the Model Congress beginning in January. Since the students will
be assigned to committees that cut across the various participating
schools, the students and advisors will be enrolled in a University
Blackboard course Web site, thus allowing them to communicate with
each other and their advisors online to discuss the pending legislation.
Advisors will be able to guide the students’ discussions and
supply them with further resource materials such as Web sites and
articles; the participants can also exchange files and send e-mail
to each other through Blackboard.
