Server set up for information hosting or file/print services

Preamble:

Being an academic institution, it is understandable that some faculty and/or students may want to set up a server(s) for educational purpose. Please understand that although the server hardware/software may be departmentally yours, you are connecting to a large network infrastructure managed by others. A configuration, which would seem harmless to your machine, can adversely affect the network and its connected user community; this has happened many times in the past causing countless hours of troubleshooting and wasted resources. This policy states that no access to the network will be granted for any computer device without a written request provided to Network and Hardware Services of Information Systems and followed by an approval.

Policy:

It is the policy of the William Paterson University that all systems set up to host information services conform to the University computing policies and are authorized by the Information Technology unit.

ADMINISTRATION OF POLICY:

The following are policies and procedures that need to be followed for all host or file/print services at the University. This includes UNIX, Linux, Windows NT and Mac OS server's services whether they are test machines, production machines, beta machines or just an experiment with an OS.

I. A written request must be sent to Network and Hardware Services stating the purpose of the host or file/print server service being requested. In addition a contact or individual responsible for the service must be listed on the written request itself. Once submitted, the request will be reviewed and then forwarded with a recommendation to the IT management committee which will make the final decision.

II. All configuration and/or network settings for any device physically connected to the University's network are to be assigned by Network and Hardware Services of Information Systems.

III. Root /Administrator passwords must be released to Network and Hardware Services and the University LAN System Administrators both at server creation time and whenever its password is changed. In addition, regular accounts for the above staff must be created.

IV. Network and Hardware Services reserves the right to shutdown any services or access at any time deemed to be endangering the University's network as a whole.

V. NO STUDENTS are allowed to set up any host or file/print server services in the University residence hall network.

VI. NO STUDENTS are allowed to set up any host or file/print server services anywhere on the University network without proper approval and sponsorship by a faculty/staff member petitioning for educational service access.

VII. NO FACULTY or STAFF member are allowed to set up any host or file/print server services without following any of the above policies and procedures.
