DAVID AND LORRAINE CHENG
Naming Gift for Library Inspired by David and Lorraine
Cheng's Love of Learning
Major Contribution The David and Lorraine Cheng Library
David Cheng (1920-2002), a former member of the University’s Board of Trustees, and his wife, Lorraine, gave a major gift to the library, which the University renamed the David and Lorraine Cheng Library in 2001.
“Lorraine and I have always loved and respected a good library,” said David Cheng during a ceremony announcing the donation. “William Paterson University is experiencing a significant period of development and expansion and we hope our gift will help the University continue to grow.”
The endowment established by the Chengs has enabled the library to expand its resources and plan other enhancements. Their generosity enabled the University to purchase scholarly materials and enhance its print and electronic collections in support of the academic and research needs of the University community.
David Cheng served on the William Paterson University Board of Trustees from 1990 to 1999. He earned a Ph.D. in structural mechanics, owned his own engineering consulting company, and was dean emeritus of engineering at the City University of New York (CUNY).
Lorraine Cheng retired from Hoffmann-LaRoche in 1994. During her 31 years with the company, she held a number of positions, most recently director of scientific information. She earned a master of science degree in biochemistry from Cornell University.
