William Paterson's Campaign for University Commons Supports the Heart of Campus Life

William Paterson’s University Commons—which includes the redesigned John Victor Machuga Student Center, Wayne Hall, and a Conference Center—was created to accommodate the pace of an increasingly active, round-the-clock
campus experience.

On any given day, you will find students congregating in the first floor dining areas, studying in a student lounge, or grabbing a quick cup of coffee in the café. The complex also offers students access to many services under one roof.

The University Commons continues to be the focus of a unique fundraising campaign sponsored by the William Paterson Foundation. This campaign offers the ability for individuals and businesses to partner with the University, not to provide funds for bricks and mortar, but to develop valuable programs and services for students that enhance college life and develop our future leaders.

“The Commons represents the University’s commitment to providing opportunities for students to learn, collaborate, and develop leadership skills in a nurturing, dynamic environment,” says Joanne Nigrelli, assistant vice president for principal gifts.

Naming opportunities are available for a number of areas in the complex, including the ballroom, the redesigned multipurpose room, the food court and rooftop terrace, the main student dining room, and numerous other lounges, meeting rooms, and office suites.

Naming Opportunities: Donor Recognition Wall

To date, more than $82,000 has been raised in gifts and pledges from alumni and corporate friends.

As a donor, you will be able to provide direct financial support for student development programs rather than construction costs.

Some of the programs and services made possible through your support include::

Senior Transitions, a program which helps students in their senior year make a successful transition to life after college
The Pioneer Leadership Institute, a student leadership development program
Collaborations for Change, which brings together students from a variety of campus organizations to work on a community service project
Alcohol education and awareness, which includes the commitment and cooperation of departments across campus
The Counseling, Health, and Wellness Center, which educates students about important health issues

“These types of collaborative experiences enhance the value of our students’ degrees when they seek employment,” says John Martone, vice president for student development. “In a climate of declining state support, funding for these initiatives is more important than ever.”

Make a Gift Now

In honor of your generosity, you may have the opportunity to name a classroom, conference room, atrium, or office within the complex or even the grand ballroom. Additionally, two donor recognition walls will be constructed to feature gifts of $100 to $999, and $1,000 to $9,999.

Secure your legacy at William Paterson University. Name a space for someone you love, a favorite professor/mentor, or for yourself.

As an donor to the University Commons Campaign, you may give to a specific student development program or let the University designate the areas of greatest need.

$1,000 Donor Wall
Main Lobby, University Commons

Prominently located in the main lobby of the University Commons, the Donor Wall will display the names of all donors who have contributed $1,000 or more. Our University Commons Campaign is unique in that all funds raised go to support programs and activities for our students. The University Commons is the heart of the campus, and as such it is the nexus of the many campus programs and initiatives that are designed to build leadership and social skills, academic and career development for our students. No funds raised in the University Commons will be used for bricks, mortar, or other capital costs of this fabulous facility.

The William Paterson University Annual Fund has long been committed to raising funds to support the academic and other priority needs of the campus. This year, the Annual Fund is partnering with the Campaign for University Commons. Donors may use their annual gift as a portion of the $1,000 minimum required to be included on the donor wall listing. For example, a donor who gives a $500 Annual Fund gift will be listed with an additional gift of $500, to comprise a total gift of $1,000.

$100 Donor Wall
Student Leadership Lounge
Third Floor, University Commons

We recognize that all donors cannot give at the $1,000 or higher level. A $100 Honor Roll of Donors will be located on the third floor of the Machuga Student Center. Displayed on the wall in the lounge area outside the suite of offices where today’s student leaders work, the Honor Roll of Donors will also inspire current and future students to carry on the tradition of involvement, service, and commitment to University life. Donors may use their annual gift as a portion of the $100 minimum required to be includd on the donal wall listing. For example, a donor who gives a $50 annual fund gift will be listed with an additional gift of $50, to comprise a total gift of $100.
