The Office of Disability Services provides assistance to students who are challenged by a variety of disabilities. Our goal is to ensure that all students are provided equal opportunities on campus, regardless of a disability. Eligibility of services is determined on an individual basis. Individuals with physical and/or learning disabilities should contact the Office of Disability Services. William Paterson believes in a total educational experience and as such, mainstreams students with disabilities into its programs and activities. All students are encouraged to participate fully in the many diverse experiences the University has to offer. Disability Services include Adjustments and Accommodations:
Disabled individuals seeking admission to William Paterson University must follow the same admission procedures as those who are not disabled. This includes meeting all standard admissions criteria. Students with disabilities are not accepted into a Aprogram@ but are asked to self-identify and request services through the Office of Disability Services. Accommodations are based on documentation and individual student needs and abilities. (Link to Admissions) Frequently asked questions: (FAQ's)How is service eligibility determined? Students in need of assistance must self-identify to the Coordinator of Disability Services and provide recent documentation of their disability. This documentation must be from an appropriate licensed professional (such as a physician or learning specialist). Is tutoring available on campus? Tutoring is available on campus in a number of locations: the Academic Support Center, the Writing Lab, and the Science Enrichment Center. Peer tutoring is available within several academic departments. Students should note that tutoring is made available to all students and that most tutors have not received specialized training for assisting students with learning disabilities. (Link to Academic Support) How will my professors be informed of my special needs? Upon determining eligibility, the Coordinator of Disability Services will draft an accommodation letter which the student will present to each professor. This letter will list any special needs the student may have. It is the student's responsibility to assess and ensure that any needs are being accommodated appropriately.
