How Do I File A Complaint?

If you believe you, or someone else, has been a victim of sexual violence, domestic/dating violence, and/or stalking by a student and/or University employee on campus or at a University-sponsored event, you can report the incident to the University Police Department at 973-720-2300, if that is consistent with the alleged victim's wishes. University Police can be reached 24 hours a day, can assist the alleged victim with obtaining medical attention, and can help with the filing of a criminal complaint with local law enforcement authorities. If the alleged victim does not wish to file a report with University Police, they should still contact Title IX Coordinator, Sobia Mahmood, via email/phone or the person filing the complaint may choose to submit the information via our Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Complaint Form. Upon being made aware of an allegation, responsible employees MUST file a report with the Title IX Coordinator.

If you believe you (or someone else) has been a victim of non-violent sex/gender-based discrimination (such as sexual harassment and/or hostile work/academic environment) by a student and/or University employee on campus or at a University-sponsored event, you should contact  Sobia Mahmood, Title IX Coordinator, via email/phone or you may choose to submit the information via our Sexual Harassment and Sexual Misconduct Complaint Form. The Title IX Coordinator will ensure that the alleged victim is made aware of any/all support services available. Upon being made aware of an allegation, responsible employees MUST file a report with the Title IX Coordinator.

Should a victim not wish to file a complaint with University Police or the Title IX Coordinator, he/she has the right to only notify a confidential employee about the alleged incident.  The University's confidential employees are the Social Worker for Student Support & Resources, Counseling Health & Wellness Center staff, and Confidential Counselors at the Employee Assistance Program. These employees are not obligated to file a report with the Title IX Coordinator and they can also assist with available resources depending upon the circumstances.

Questions about sex discrimination or other complaints that might fall under Title IX can also be filed externally with the Office of Civil Rights, (OCR), U.S. Department of Education, 400 Maryland Ave., SW Washington, DC 20202.
