Each bus is equipped with a GPS unit that uses cell tower technology to send exact coordinate positions of the bus to our web page and our mobile site. Is there an app for this? Go to iTunes or the Android Marketplace and search for “DoubleMap.” Once you download the app and launch it for the first time, you will be presented with a list of all of the entities that use the Ride Systems software. Scroll down to the letter W and choose “William Paterson University.” Once you select it, WPU will be your default every time you open the app. How can I access the tracking system? The system can be accessed multiple ways. To view the map, which shows the location of the buses, you can: Refer to Commuter Services Transportation section of the University’s website In addition to a map view, you can request an alert that will tell you when the bus is expected to arrive at a particular scheduled bus stop. What are the BLACK dots on the route? The black dots indicate the location of the scheduled bus stops. You can click on the icon representing a bus stop to see the name of the stop, the stop #, and, if the bus is in service, the next times the bus is expected to arrive at that stop. Why does the driver have a tablet in the bus? The tablet is enabled to send the GPS signal for the tracking system. The driver is also using software on the tablet to count the number of students, faculty and staff getting on or off the bus at a particular stop. This data tells us what stops and times are the most popular for riders, which is helpful when we consider modifications to the service schedule. The driver can only use the passenger counting software on the tablet; it is locked for all other use so as not to provide a distraction that would interfere with the safety of the riders and the driver.
