Internship FAQs

1. My internship site requires a background check. How long will that take?

It depends on the site. A background check from the Department of Corrections (DOC) can take up to 60 days.  However, most sites that require background checks and/or fingerprints will not be able to sign your Internship Agreement Form until the background/fingerprint check returns.

2. Why do I have to interview for an internship?

Most agencies will want to make sure you are a good fit for their organization and that you have a passion for working with their targeted population.  Before the interview, look at the agency’s website and learn as much about the organization as possible. Remember, you only have one time to make a good impression. Treat this interview like a job interview.  You should wear business professional clothing, be on time and bring extra copies of your resume. Also, ask them if there is anything else they would like for you to bring to the interview. Some agencies will ask you to bring in addition to a government issued ID, your social security card as well. They may need these documents to submit for DOC/Parole clearance and background checks.

3. How can I get help with writing a resume and cover letter?

Visit the WPU Career Development Center website and download their job and internship guidebook that has advice and examples. Once you have created drafts of your resume and cover letter, you may, well in advance, make an appointment with the Internship Coordinator for further advice.

4. Do I have to pay for my fingerprints and background check?

During the interview make sure you ask if payment is required.

5. When can I start my internship?

You should start your internship hours no earlier than the first day of the semester in which you are registered for the course.

6. My internship supervisor wants me to complete training before I start. Can I get credit for the training?

Yes, as long as you start the training on or after the first day that you are eligible to begin your internship, i.e. the first day of the semester in which you are enrolled in the course.

7. Do I get credit for attending staff meetings?

Yes, you can count staff meetings, trainings, workshops, time spent traveling between locations, and any other time spent on other internship duties toward your internship hours.

8. What happens if I cannot complete my internship hours?

If you cannot successfully complete your internship/field hours you will be unable to successfully complete the course.

9. How often will I have to attend class for this course?
